ok i was browsing street commodores forums and a VS ute that has the an autometer taco and speedo where the original instrument cluster are and this is something i have pondered for a while now, modding the face plate to fit the gauges would be easy and cheap, i have water temp, oil temp and volts gauges allready which i can mod into the area where the air vent is but few things im curious about. how difficult would it be use get a fuel gauge working for a VS? is there any crazy mods to get an autometer or speco speedo to work? how does this affect road worthyness? would i need like an engineers certificate or anything? i have a spare cluster surround at home and im gonna get into it tonight and start modding it to fit the gauges and LED lights for engine alarms and the other warning lights, just the speedo and fuel has me worried.
Mate, I don't think you'll need an engineers report. As for installation, it shouldn't be too hard at all, just gotta make sure the clearances are sufficient for the longer(usually) gauges. One thing I have been considering is mounting an lcd where the cluster is and running the efilive dash there, just a thought though.
yeah ive thought about the EFI live thing aswell, only problem with that is if your laptop/pc what ever you use to run it crashes you got no speedo, then you also have to wait for it to boot up everytime you start the car. would be realy cool mod though.
You could go nuts and maybe order up some Dakota Digital parts to fit out your dash but unless your building a ball tearing killer of an engine all the extra gauges and accessories wouldnt be much use. Theres nothing worse than seeing stock or exhaust and intake cars running around with huge monster tachs.
well im not gonna have a monster engine but i plan to have a turbo or charger setup within the next 6 months, so it will be far from stock
Id run a mini itx board with an embedded linux os. And o minimal virtual machine state with efilive running as a saved state. If it crashes you could be back up in well under 20 seconds. You could also set it up to auto reboot on problems so there is no user interaction required. It could be setup to boot on startup(of vehicle)
a while back when i was researching putting a computer in my car i was reading all about having it automatically boot up when you start the car and shutdown when car turns off. i was considering putting an old P3 laptop in my boot under the parcel tray and having EFIlife on a 7" LCD in my centre console, only reason i didnt is cause the efilive i have looks like crap, its mostly just raw numbers. be nice to know someone who could make a custom program and set it up on a nice 7" wide screen lcd on the instrument cluster.
