Hey guys, I went to go and buy some cut and polish today to give my car a good buff and get rid of those little annoying scratches over my car. I read on the back of the bottle and it said not to use cut and polish on cars with a clear coat. Is that true or can i use it on my car? Has anyone used it on their cars?

Cheers!

they recommend not to use cut and polish on new cars/new paint jobs coz it cuts into the clear coat on the car, but on older cars it is used to restore the paint and remove those scratches

your better off buffing the c*ap outa it with polish than cutting yourself..

if you dont know how to do it properly dont.. iv got wayy to many mates that have tried and end up with one panel with no clear left...

best way get a decent polish.. a rotary buffer with a foam pad and a spray bottle full of water..
pour some polish out on the panel doing one at a time and mist with water.. with the buff on slow work the along the panel the trick is to get it warm and the paint with flow to fill the scratches in.. always keep it moist n slow!

paint can only be cut so many times because eventualy youll cut straight through the paint.. better off avoiding it when possible

Yeah i was worried that eventually my clear will come off. I will have a look at getting a rotary buffer and doing it the way you suggested. I tried the drivers door today with some polish by hand but it didn't make any difference, just made the panel nice and smooth lol.

So... it says NOT to use it on cars with clear coat and your asking us if this is true? Are you asking us if your car has a clear coat or if the manufacturer is telling the truth? Exactly what did you buy?

I suggest you read my posts in the Detailing thread in the General section. Also the thread made in Care Care products sponsor section. ...and a rotary polisher in the hands of a novice is a bad idea.

I was just asking if it would be ok to use on my clear coat even though the manufacturer says not to cause i have heard of people using cut & polish on clear coats. I just wanted to verify it.

I didn't buy anything i just have some Kitten polish at the moment. I have used a rotary polish before just never owned one.

Every cut and polish is difference. I know Kitten make one in a green tin and one in a red tin. One is clear coat safe, the other isn't. Personally I don't even like the term "Cut and polish". It's a term used by detailers 20 or 30 years ago where you would use one product to do the 'cutting' to remove a layer of paint. Then use another product to remove the hazing created by the cut and bring back the shine. Modern day products have diminishing abrassives which break down and do the whole job with just one pass. You've also got different levels of cutting ability. Some extremely fine, others very harsh. I'm guessing the stuff you looked at that wasn't recommended was rather harsh.
