My dad normally gets a average amount of mail, but after he had an argument with his neighbour below him (unit block) he has gotten 1 letter in the last week and a half, and thats cause i went over to his place and took it in while hes on holidays.

Can anyone suggest how i would go about catching him rather than sit there all day and watch.

Leave a bomb on the door of the mailbox, when anyone else trips it it blows their hand off. Pretty easy to find the culprit then.

If within eye view set up a web camera (good quality) and have it detect motion - cheap and easy solution. Though I would do something just to be sure the mail's being stolen first like create a fake letter (or a note in an envelope), make it look real with a stamp and everything and put it in his letterbox yourself... if it goes missing you know it's being stolen, if not your postal service has become crap or the amount he's getting has dropped off.

I liked minux's idea, then you have to go and post something sensible, way to ruin the thread!

is it an open mailbox or one with a lid?

if it's one with a lid, just put a lock on it. or put a razorblade under where you pull the lid up

When I read the thread title I was going to say "post his address and we'll send him some mail" but when I saw it was theft and not someone lonely I got all sensible

Put in a witty note so he knows he's been caught ;)

Assuming the guy actually opens the stolen mail, instead of just throwing it out

Put a fake letter/small parcel filled with white powder and write a fake letter from a pissed off terrorist so the bitch/prick thinks it's anthrax.

fill your dad's mailbox with marbles, when the neighbour opens it to steal his mail they'll go everywhere.

But if she/he takes the letter and reports it you can prove they were stealing the mail.

I should have added to not actually post the letter, just address it and put it in there yourself.

Could probably get a small paint bomb?

Failing that, nothing wrong with webcam I guess, privacy would only be a problem if he knew about it. Just say that you saw him do it, don't have to say you filmed him.

What privacy laws? Australians do not have the right to privacy. We especially do NOT have the right to be not photographed. The high court has even said as much "Australians do not have the right to not be photographed".

One cannot oppose the taking of a photo in a public place. One can also not request the deletion of said photo, or even oppose the publication of it unless it is defamatory etc.

Put a fake letter or three in the mailbox. If they go missing confront him straight up. Have your phones on voice recorder on while doing this. If he doesn't own up and you can't get anything potentially incriminating on record rig up the webcam, place further fake mail and attempt to get the police involved (odds are they will brush you off however).

You can take video/photo of anybody who is on public property as long as you are either on public property too, or on your own property. If you're on someone else's property, the property owner/s can request you stop filming or taking photos.

As for the voice recording the conversation, you can do this without telling him, but unless you are going to take it to the police, you are not legally allowed to let anyone listen to it, nor are you allowed to tell anybody the gist of the conversation. You need his permission to show or convey the conversation to anyone who was not a party in it. You are allowed to show it to police in 'pursuit of your legal rights' or something like that though.

I'd say, get video footage via motion-detecting webcam, and ask him about it. After you do, tell him you have footage of him stealing the mail, and if he tries to shrug it off, remind him that it is considered theft, and ask if he would really like to be charged with that for something as silly as stealing mail because the stupid twit can't let a grudge go.
