Hi all,
I recently started taking my family heirloom stock '86 vl to a "classic car garage" for some issues I wanted fixed, among them the dash clock and temp gauge. After hassling them for 4 weeks I finally got her back with both these issues resolved. I was told that the cluster had been sent to be repaired (and charged around $250 for this) but. .I suspect they just chucked in a second hand cluster from a wreckers, as now the odo doesn't work (was working when I gave it to them), and now somehow reads 200 000km less than it did before??! Can't see why the instrument repair place would have wound back mine..Thoughts?

When changing/repairing a speedo/odo, it must be set to the original k's.
If you have proof of a reset of k's they could cop a substantial fine.
I would put your "classic car garage" in the "not too bright" department.
Contact transport or fair trading in your state for further advice.

IMO it does sound like they have replaced it with another cluster. The instrumentation guys it apparently got sent away to would not wind back the km's. I would be calling the "classic car garage"

To rewind the temp gauge and repair the clock (2 x capacitors) shouldn't have cost any more than $80 - $100.

The problem usually usn't the instruments though. It's often the solder joints on the back of the socket on the PCB need to be resoldered.
