i got a 2nd hand dash fascia thing from the wreckers so i could paint it. put down the colour, waited and hr or so and went and put another coat on it. all was good. came back to it a few hrs later to put a clear coat on it and it looked sweet. but when i came out to see if it was dry, the dash had turned a whitish grey colour. :bang: its never happened b4 it has been raining here and its cold and windy. could that be the reason why? also how do i go about fixing it? sanding back im guessing, but with wat grit? cheers,
wat sort of clear coat did u use?? some clear coats dont take 2 well on certain paints, the wind and rain wouldnt have had nething 2 doith it unless u didnt prepare it 1st but the 1st coat u said went on well and thats where ur problems would have started so couldnt really b that either
The finer the better for the finished clear. 320 to take the clear off bake to base colour - then 400-600 wet. Behind the plastic lens of the cluster it will look OK. For ref. when finishing the top clear coat u would use 1200 - 1500 to polish.
You should be doing this on a warm day. I did mine on my VS and and left in direct sunlight - came out excellent!! Clear coat don't react well on cold days.
I agree, do it on a warmer day, and make sure you prepare it properly with the right type of primer. You would need to use a plastic primer, seeing as though it's a part of the dash you are painting. Thread Validated by 12Voltking
sweet, sanded it back today and started with a new can of plastic primer, and after every coat i stuck it in the bathroom under the heated lights. worked an absolute treat. thanx guys
if its too cold 2 pak has a nasty habit of "blooming" off the gun.....tends to turn a white milky colour......:bang: :bang:
Just make sure you don't apply too much heat as some coats they turn creamy white. A warm day about 25deg C is enough.
dude ever thought of going for a matte finish? ive seen a few cars with it done (proton satria gtis etc.) with a 2 tone dash lay out xcept the dash it self is finished in a matte finish, i rkn it looks sweet, looks a little differnt i rkn
thats it, always use the plastic primer 1st! give every single coat u spray adequate time to sufficently dry! when u spend good money ( pending ya budget) & the look of your car, u dont wont a didgy job...spray it 30cm away form the surface, little by little & the more thinnner coats u do, the HOTTER the spray job will look, trust me!
