This one must not be a very good 5l then as I still havent done a burnout or doughnuts since purchase. Spun the wheels a couple times but that would make my engine p*ss weak if thats what caused the bottom end knock
Poor maintenance generally leads to bottom end issues in the V8's The V8 bottom end is tough as nails but when maintained poorly the oiling system tends to let go causing a lack of oil pressure which kills the motor. Same thing happened to me, when the oil pickup get carbon/sludge build up you can expect 10psi or less oil pressure.
Thanks for the info, had no idea that could be the cause. Im planning to book the car in next week. Fingers crossed
Happens to most 5 litres as they get older, people use cheap oils and do long service intervals which cause the sludge to build, and because the 5L had an undersized pickup for an engine it's size it blocked easily. I only use Penrite HPR30 (which all the AussieV8 forum 304/308 guys use) and change it every 5000km......I wouldn't put anything other than HPR30 in a 304
still not in the shop but I got a few things... Mechanic hasnt found me a new motor yet so still waiting to book it in. But that hasnt stopped me picking up some new bits for it. Firstly is a brand new crane 286 cam and lifters to match. Scored it for a great deal. I have some questions however. Can i run that in my car with no other mods/parts required? Also are they easy enough to install yourself if you are mechanically minded? Next little treat is i am ditching the sv 5000 kit in favour of the rest of the genuine aero kit that i managed to talk my brother in law into selling to me. Will post pics as soon as i can
A 286 NEEDS higher compression, so the heads will have to be skimmed and (ideally) ported (and at the same time new valve springs)....you will also need a tune so there goes another $550 minimum (a good dyno tune will be around $800), the car needs to be tuned for the cam, it will not run on the factory tune with a cam as aggressive as a 286 (Don't waste your money on a MACE memcal or ebay memcal as they are still for stock engines not high compression cammed motors) It's not a job for a beginner and you need to buy tools to dial them in. (and the head work will have to be done by a machinist/engine builder) A 286 will also be a little doughy on an auto so good idea to get 3.45 ratio or better gears for the rear end.
Sigh.. i envy your vast amount of knowledge. Thanks heaps for all the information in regards to the cam.
A little taste of what is to come Well, the Vn is still sitting at my house. Havent been able to find a new engine for it so i might just get the bottom end rebuilt on this one. This hasn't stopped me getting some more goodies for it. I have put a deposit down for the Crane 286 cam and lifters and will be picking it up on the 8th of April. I have been told that to increase the compression ratio, i can bolt on a set of VT 5L heads, so i think i will do that. Still unsure of where to go for the tune though. Also my HDT Aero kit is now at my house and ready for final sand and primer, then paint. I have taken a couple quick pics while test fitting the garnish and spoiler just to see how its going to look (i couldnt help myself) The rest of the kit wont go on the car until i have painted it so no photos of the kit for now. Finally, i have a video of me starting the car after sitting for a few weeks. Still sounds fairly nice but blowing a fair bit of black smoke which leads me to belive that the rings are gone possibly or maybe something more sinister. If anyone can shed any light on this and steer me in the right direction as to what i need to bring this engine back to life, that would be highly appreciated. Any way, without further adieu, here are some pics! Cam and Lifters: Aero Garnish pics: And..The video:
thanks mate i love it. im hating that i have to be patient if i want the kit to look good when i paint it lol. i just want to put it on now soo bad
yeah thats for sure. im just glad i actually have some money and both cars i now have are actually decent lol. ive had to go through alot of crappers to get where im at but im happy now haha
Cheaper to just get your heads skimmed etc than buying new heads (unless you can get them dirt cheap, and if u can then there is probably something wrong with them) Remember the VT's are a roller motor, so as far as I know you would need a roller cam and roller lifter not the standard flat tappet lifters and cam setup. It doesn't cost much to get headwork done to yours so just go that way (a good set of VT heads will probably be $4-500) Go to Leon at awesome automotive, he is the only tuner in Adelaide I would trust with my car (he is widely renowned as one of the best V6/5L tuners in the country, people bring cars from all over to see him), you can't call him though, he is so busy he won't answer....you need to drop by and see him
