Hey guys I know theres a few of you who have served with the defence force so I thought maybe someone would know the answers.

Situation is theres a young fella a few doors down just finished his hsc he wants to join the navy mind u we live 10 mins from a raaf base- u would think he'd just join the raafies lol. But anyway his dad was in the navy and his pop so he is wants to join. Thing is hes a nice enough fella, pretty smart but I'll put this bluntly, hes a bit of a fat bastard. Actually I reckon he'd be pushing 150kg.

Now since finishing his hsc hes been out n about every morning walking and rides his bike in the arvo. I just wonder what the physical requirements are like these days. I'd feel a bit sorry for the poor bugger if he were to be rejected cos of his weight... But on the other hand I can see the need for all defence force personel to be fit and trim and taut afterall they may be protecting our great country. So does anyone know the actual physical requirements?

HAH, good old weight vs height tests for the army sucked. I had to be 78kg at 180 cm's when i joined. It was a nightmare.

The basic tests are easy to pass, the weight requirements though can be challenging at times. After 6 months at my unit and after 6 months of initial recruit and IET training i weighed in at 108kg.
Weight means nothing once your in, providing you can pass your BFA and any RFT your reigiment or unit may have.
The main reason for being harsh on weight is because of physical injuries occuring in recruit and IET phases. It is very high, you only need to check out the holding platoon at kappoka(retard section or as we used to call them the Cluster **** brigade and H Force at Singleton again a retard section for drop outs and injuries).

Sorry to rant on a bit :p

Basically he will need to drop AT LEAST 70 kg to be safe.

Whoa its gonna be a rough trot to lost that kind of weight.
How long does he have to lose it and how tall is the guy ??
I lost about 30KG in about 3 months and that was very quick and a lot of work but to lose 70 would be a massive feat.

I think you find its measured on BMI and if you go to the Defence force web page theres a calc in there which will tell you what your BMI needs to be. Eg. At 180cm you can be accepted @ 106kg with a BMI of 32.72 which is - BMI 30 to 33. You fall within the acceptable range for entry however, your body fat percentage will also be calculated and recorded. So BASICALLY he wont need to drop 70kg at all but a mere est. 44kg
Check the link below for all the info and julie i would point him in this direction and also have him speak to a recruitment center as well.

fabz is 100% correct it is all about your bmi and all the services have different fitness standards

Well, i am basing the standards on when i joined the army.

Obviously things have changed seeing as how i last time i visited my unit i seen quite a few pat pricks who would be lucky to do a push-up (guts would rest on the ground in a push-up position).

I know standards have dropped, but i honestly didn't think they had dropped that much.

Fabz, do you really think they will allow people over the 30 in? They will tell you to go away and come back...just like every other force does. Which means at 180cm you WILL need to be at least 97 kg.
This being said, they will keep knocking you back on this until they feel happy with your weight. My BMI was 28, i had to be down to 78kg to be accepted that was a BMI of 24. If you think they will take bare minimal, think again. The defence tries not to accept overweight people. If this friend of Julies weighs 150 and is 180cm, he has a BMI of 46 that is insanely obese.

i am 180 and HAD to be 78kg. That was for Army though. As i said, things may have slackened off now or it may be different for the real mans defence force :p

Reason i am not in, long story short, i broke both my legs quite badly in continuation training after E.T. After around 6 surgeries, i failed my fitness assessment( the metal plates caused massive tissue damage). My legs could no longer support me under full kit on a 3.2 km run. Could pass the BFA fine. Just not our units tests. It was either be med class 4 and stay in as a POGO( no hope in hell i would do that) or take my med class and leave. I took the latter. Sometimes i am glad i did, most times i wish i was back with my unit serving my country. It's just sad that so much of the lifestyle the Army was has been washed away with PC crap and do gooder anti abuse laws etc. It is now harder than ever to trust arse end arnold isn't going to shoot you in the bollocks.

Depends on ADF needs, not yours.

It is true that the ADF believe that a BMI in the range 20 to 25 is normal. BMI is weight in Kg devided by the square of height in metres. Thus, "normal" weight for 180 cm is 65 to 81 Kg. Up to 30 is considered overweight, and then above 30 is obese.

The starting point is "normal" weight range. If they are unable to source enough recruits and manning becomes critical, they may relax the weight limits, depending on the role.

I know one young lady who was rejected by the RAAF because she was too thin.

On the other hand, I am aware of one very experienced former serviceman who has been re-inlisted with a BMI marginally over 30. But he is highly qualified in a very specialist area.

The ADF is currently having manning challenges. Civil employment is high, and retention among those cashed up from "warlike" service has presented some problems. I know one early twenties soldier, who has servied in East Timor, Afghanistan and Irag. On the return from each, he bought a house, and the three houses are now self sufficent investments. Financially he has little other than interest to hold him in the service.

However, I see no recruiting prospects for someone of 150 Kg and no experience unless he is about 7 foot four inches. And then at that height, he would be too tall for a significant number of jobs where build is critical, i.e. aircrew for ejaction seat equipped aircraft and probably submarines.

Still, even if he does not make it, the exercise will do him the world of good.

the age limits for the defence for are 17-52, and when weight an things come into it it is all dependant on age, and the type of job you want to do.

Erm, if you read fabz post then mine you will see i am saying that the 30 is BMI. Most sections of the defence will not accept a BMI over this even though they say it is within range. This had nothing to do with age :p

My uncle left after 20 years service at 38, joined back up 3 years later. So age is no boundary within reasons.

    hey, i remember this one

back in teh day when i was in the navy it was all done on bmi i was 178cm tall and weight in at 110kg, (was muscle type fella) they look at how much fat you have in your body. the navy isnt as harsh as the army was back in the day, but yeah, ultimatly it is upto the recruiter and the doc at the time. be a good idea to seak medical advice first. have a chat to the defence force recuiter, they are more th an happy to help.

Why are so many people so fat? I mean does it take people wanting to join the forces to get healthy? I'm still not sure i understand why people find it so hard to maintain reasonably healthy lifestyle.
I guess that makes for a completely different thread.
