No matter how bad things get , be it panic attacks or depression, talking to someone neutral can be hugely beneficial, I was diagnosed as a clinical depressive about 18 years ago , the psychiatrist said I’d probably had it for years

Yes and no. As a bloke who has lived with the cond for 25 years talking doesn't really cut it. I have seen counsellors 3 or 4 of them but sitting in a room telling some stranger all about my problems has been a complete waste of time and money and it's the same with a lot of blokes. It may work for some but I have worked in social services and trained in counselling and social work at uni. Talking works 20-30% of the time. The biggest thing for a bloke is maintaining a sense of identity. So much of our world has taken away a blokes identity. We have often lost the head of the house and our identity as bread winners and taking care of our family has been taken away from us because our jobs are not what they used to be. We are told by society we are no longer the protectors but instead society says to be suspicious of a bloke. I was counselling a client the other day and met him for the first time. He told me how he was seeing a medical specialist because his GP thought it would help him. I talked to him about man sht and he responded really well. I said to him yep we are told as blokes we need to open up and get in touch with our feelings. But it mostly goes against the way we were made. Best therapy I have ever been able to give a bloke is time with other blokes doing physical work. I told this 50 year old bloke the other day, " you don't need a counsellor; you need a few days work". He said to me that is exactly it!! Why these professionals on 200 bucks an hour don't get that I will never know. Because I am yet to have a bloke be it young or old come into my service and tell me how receiving counselling from professionals has changed their life for the better. IMO men respond way better if they have purpose, work and projects. Because idle hands is the biggest hindrance to a mans mental wellbeing.
