Okay, just realised it's the kick down solenoid.
Right in front of it is a vacuum port which is the shift solenoid.
And at the other end of the vacuum line I have connected - (drum roll) nothing!
But the output for this on the alternator vac pump is broken. So I will complete the dodgy kickdown repair a bit better and fix the vacuum port.

Then retest for gear shifting.

So tidied up the three hard lines that run under the trans and engine (two for fluid cooler and one for vacuum) and connected the vacuum to the vacuum modulator on the distribution pump. I found out that this is a controlled vacuum bleed relative to engine throttle position. So I'm probably going to need that.
Tightened up some sump bolts while I was under there, must have been loose since I bought the engine.

Then today I corrected the vacuum hose nipple on the banjo on the vacuum pump.
What a PITA thing to weld.

As long as it works, the appearance doesn't really matter.

I’m feeling a bit more ok with it.

I can’t weld and it’s something I’d like to teach myself.

My gasless mig was very cheap, came with a helmet. I also bought proper gauntlet gloves and away we go.
Single dial 'smart machine' that adjusts wire speed and amps in one go. Makes it dummy proof.
Always better with individual dials if you know what you are doing though.
Definitely you should just get one. They come in useful ALL the time! I wonder how I ever didn't have one.

If its a single dial it probably only has one power setting. Notice on the mig usually the 2 dials are volts and wire speed.

Temporary adjustable wire hooked up between the throttle linkage and the vacuum modulator. Theory being that the controlled vacuum bleed (the modulator) affects shift rpm points.
If it shifts as it should on my next test drive, I should then be able to adjust wire shorter/longer to control rpm shift points. Then cut wire or make something better looking.
