Hi Guys had this posted in the VS section but thought I would move it here as its more of a general ecotec/engine question than specific to the VS Over the past few months my engine has been developing a loud knock/rattle upon revving, it also seems to rattle a bit under acceleration it doesn't appear to be coming from the top end of the engine and I have run my stethoscope over the car and can't find anything up top. I'm thinking maybe the big end bearing is on its way out, or possibly a flywheel/torque converter issue as thats where the noise seems to be coming from. Heres the video of the noise: Any ideas? Hoping the engine isn't shagged Thanks Guys
Hmm, yeah my mates vr had a similar noise and we thought it was a cracked flex plate, turns out it was a big end bearing... Its much louder then the noise your getting.... VR **** box - YouTube
You have a dog in your engine. Nah seriously thats lifter noise. Do an engine flush and run some lifter free first. If that doesnt fix it change the lifters. Always start with the easier things lol.
I have tried that, I have also run my stethoscope over the whole top end of the engine and can't find any rattle there. And its noisier from underneath the car than in the engine bay. (that video was taken from underneath where its alot louder) Was thinking possibly the balancer shaft bearing is gone? (which wouldn't be so bad as I could just disable the balancer shaft and stick a double row timing chain on there)
Fairly confident now that its the balancer shaft. Found a few VR/VS's online with the same noise and that was their problem Will pull timing cover off next weekend and take the balancer shaft spigot/cog out to disable the shaft and see if that fixes the issue
Is the noise louder on the driverside near the lower rear of the front guard? and do you have extractors on the car?
Dude, I think your on the wrong forum. This is about Commodores/Holdens, not personal health and fitness :hmmm:
