yep , pretty much all the diffs refered to in the OP are live axle unless it says IRS.

the VN and VS diffs are the same. the only hickup you may encounter is that the VS may have ABS. if that is the case then swapping the whole axle out is going to create hassles as the VN diff housing doesn't have the bits for the ABS. if you just put the VN gears and LSD center into your VS diff housing then it won't be a problem:thumbsup:

Ok cool.
I was even thinking about just taking the entire VN diff and just chucking out the old VS one?

Stupid idea? or will it work?

Sorta going for as little as work as possible, need the ute on the road sooner rather than later.

as long as the VS doesn't have ABS then it would be straight forward swap

Hmm how confident are you on that?

A friend of mine had a wagon open centre diff installed in his VS ute and had no problems i suppose.

Would it still be ok to use in the vn diff (which i believe is out of a wagon) ?

the wagons and utes have different shock mounting points to the sedans. a quick visual inspection will confirm if the VN (wagon) diff is the same as your VS ute

hi guys , i just got a diff with 4.11 gears from the wreakers , it apears to be a vn 4cyl diff? same psycially as a v6 diff but with drum brakes. it has the same back cover on the diff with 9 bolts. does anyone know how to tell by looking at it its not a old vh type or where they quite a bit smaller? some part numbers maby? cheers.
