on the VN S1, i thought the fly wheel can be bolted straight onto the auto crank? seeing as that is 6-bolt too? maybe im on the wrong page here?

yep on the wrong track.
early vn has different crankshafts for manual and auto.
Both are 6 bolt but sit in different positions relative to the block.
so a straight bolt on is a no.
You can use an adaptor but it costs, you would also need a 6 bolt flywheel and the engine you have is way old buy now. you could pick up a vr engine and fit it for what the adaptor would cost you.
Then you can just fit the flywheel you have there and have a newer engine.
I paid $60 for a full vp engine up here at the dump. it goes real hard to.

Yes they are both 6 bolt but the Manual crank are further apart than the auto crack, so it will not bolt up, thats why you need an addaptor from CRS to convert it, or a flywheel made up but they are like $600 also from CRS.

A motor usually goes hard before it dies :)
