Hi, I went to put a new starter motor in my old mans vr bt1 v6 auto today and he had the wrong one. His is a delco and the one he had was a bosch.

The bosch one wont bolt in as the inspection cover opening isnt big enough.
I want to know if the flex plates are the same on the different motors because i have an inspection cover from a motor with a bosch starter and i want to put the bosch starter on because it is an easier one to get if it stuffs up again. Also is it as straight forward as swaping inspection covers and bolting it all back up.

Also how many came out with the delco starter? I didnt know that they came out with them and neither did my dad who works for repco and has never ran into this problem before.

    Cheers Shane

i came across this sounds like manual one r the delco brand...
"When fitting the Commodore V6 to a manual transmission a manual starter motor must be used. The starter motor for the automatic can be identified as having a nose housing around the pinion gear. The manual starter motor is manufactured by Delco and only has the pinion gear protruding."

    EDIT
ebay have the delco ones 4 a vn-vr auto...

how different do the starters look.. and the original one in it was the delco and ur trying to put the bosch one in correct...
the bosch starter number is BXH139

I went to motor traders and asked for one cos mines on it's way out. Told him it's a VR V6 Auto and he asks me if it's a bosch, I said i'm not sure, then he says being an auto it would be a bosch. So how do you find out what one to use? The bosch one cost $130.

Yep there were 2 different starter motors used and were used on both auto and manuals.
The Delco remy starter brand new are over $1000
The Bossh is the way to go.
Just look at the brand on the starter, The delco has a smaller snout so smaller hole in the bell housing cover, The bossh is larger and wont fit thru.
To fit the bossh, you need to change the bell housing cover, The flexplates are the same.
Have to jack the engine up, remove the steering rack, and front exhaust pipes to remove the bell housing covers.
