How do I locate exactly where the hole is for the dip stick tube in a 6 cyl ecotec VS?
The entire dip stick and tube is missing from my recently purchased vehicle.
I can locate what feels like a hole in the block just above the oil pan. But however, It appears to be a ‘dead-end’ as I cannot insert the tube. Or, even just the dip stick alone as a means of exploration.
Could this be why the tube is missing? Because someone’s done something to block the hole by accident? If so, Is there a way I can unblock it in situ? Help?

The hole for the dipstick is next to the knock sensor which has a little steel cover plate around it. It can be a right pain to locate. Get a nice bright torch and you should be able to find it.

You'll need a new dipstick so I suggest you head down to a local wreckers and get a new one, any ecotec V6 from VS to VY will do, just have a really good look where it sits in the block before you pull it out.

There are differences in VS dipsticks, Series 1 differs from Series II with a higher level marked in the later ones which was due to Service departments reporting back to Holden that owners were showing up saying their oil levels were low before their next service date was due, Holden's way of fixing it was to lift the high point mark and having the stick show a wider range between Full and Add, thus removing the fear factor of owners thinking their engine was faulty and chewing up oil. as we all know the Buicks and Ecotecs were big oil users.

Holden also increased the volume in the later model ecotec motors but as far as I'm aware the sump never changed so they just increased the full level.

It's neither here or there.

Regardless it's always better to have more oil than less as it is actually part of the cooling system as well and the more you have flowing through the engine the better cooling control you have to help out the radiator system.

Well I don't think the user will find a early dip stick so it'll all work out in the end.

Personally, I just fill it with 4.8 litres and call it good regardless of what the dip stick says.

And I'm rather disappointed Holden never fitted water/oil coolers on our cars like they did on the export models to the middle east.

Their heat over there is absolutely intense to the point where they left their cars running in the car parks all day to keep the A/C running and the interior cool. Petrol is cheap as over there so that was never an issue, but imagine coming back to your car at the end of the day and finding it had split a hose and ceased the engine in the process.

I knew it! The Yanks are responsible for global warming, depleting the ozone layer, causing petrol shortages, and seizing engines. The F@#kers!

Have you checked in the drivers seat? As my dad always said in my car, there was a dipstick behind the wheel.
