My daughter has purchased a 2008 VE Commodore. There are 3 dots on the dip stick. Where should the oil level sit in relation to these dots and what oil should she use?

The oil should ideally be up to the top dot. The three dots will be full, halfway and minimum at the bottom. The VEs normally indicate what oil type to use on the oil cap. Buy that oil type (5W/30 I think) in a decent brand (not crap supermarket no name oil).

The service intervals are quite long at 15000kms so you want a top quality oil to last the service interval without degrading.

Forum members experience would suggest as these get some k’s on them 7000km-10000km changes are highly recommended. It does help reduce the gunked up cams etc under the covers.

Quality 5-30 as per the books and change it twice a year plus the filter.

Always been a frequent oil change advocate.
My SS has done just under 10000km since I bought it in February 2018 and just had its 4th oil change.

Very important to change the oil regularly if your only doing low mileage or short trips.

Having said that I change my oil every 10,000kms in the SSV as I nearly always do at least 30 minutes of driving every time I drive and it runs on LPG so not much opportunity for contamination build up.

The SV6 gets the oil changed every 12 months regardless of mileage as it only does low mileage now and mostly short trips.

Agreed mine does actually get a proper drive when it does come out along with a warm up before it goes anywhere but just not super often, it’s a weekend toy which isn’t every weekend either
