i have distortion occuring in my subs.. i wanted to no if its better too have bass on my head unit turnde right down cause i dont no if its the amop distortiong from the head unit OR the subs distorting from my amp.. im running a 1600w peak@2ohm amp and running 2 sony 800w peak subs.. sofar ive been running them stereo, theres good bass but most ov it comes from the size ov the boot and not the box itself.. so its not booming deep bass more like tapping bass.. should i invest in a new box or amp or subs?

Try changing ur rcas, running them differently, play around with ur frequency of the subs - low pass. Dont turn up ur gain to high max 3/4.

What amp and deck u running? 2ohms is fine, try running them in 4 ohms to see any noticable different just an idea and always check the earth some times it's that when u get distortion - rub away a bit of the paint on the metal of the car body and use a lug to crimp the earth bond to the chassis.

well im not a 12V d.c MASTER only a daily 240 - 415 volt cert 3 electrican apprentice lol :)

are you using the gain on your amp as a volume control?? If so, dont. Turn your gain right down, and with the bass on your HU turned all the way up, slowly turn up the volume until it starts to distort. Thats the max you can have your HU on without distorting. If it goes all the way up without distorting, great

With your HU set just below where it was distorting (so its not distorting) start to turn your gain know on the amp up until you hear distortion. Turn it back a little and there you go. As long as you dont turn your HU up over the distortion level you found before, your subs wont distort

R ur RCAs n power cables running paralell to each other?
If they r seperate them. More power u draw the biggger the magnetic field.
Bigger the field, the more distrotion u'll get.

Not saying thats ur problem, but something to think about

ok time to knock this thread on the head.
have a look on car audio australia, there is a good gain setting tutorial there.
do that 1st.
if there is still distorsion then read and perform all steps in the CAA noise removing tutorial.
then maybe, just maybe, you are driving the subs too hard, eg: bass boost is set to after the ports tuning frequency and the drivers cone is over-extending, the cone is just reaching the limits of its suspension. are al the bass boosts tuned to max?

the problem is similar to having cheap subs hooked onto a good amp.. except im not running cheap subs.. the subs should coap with the amp.. thats y i dont no if its the amp putting out a distorted signal OR the subs themselves distorting.. every wire is perfect, perfect earth perfect wiring up the car. rcas up one side and the power and remote on the other.. the amp is from my understanding "800w peak x2 @4ohm" and 1600 peak@2 ohm.. im running 2 subs as stereo (left and right) the subs are 800w peak each.. ive ran one sub in the double box bridged so and that had more bass than running the 2 so i think mayb all i need is a prper size box for them.. but ill read about the gain control

Just to say it...

Peak power figures mean dick. Find the RMS figures...those actually mean something.

yer but they both work out about the same.. i think rms the subs are 300 and the amp is only about the same 300x2 i lost the book but they were around that

i think that im pushing the subs to get the bass that a good box should provide at a lower volume.. ill try out my mates box with 1 sub and see how it goes.. i want to do a boot install with some mdf and mount the subs vertically in the boot

**** oath, if you are making the subs try to play frequencies that are clearly on the roll off slope then they will sound like **** becaue the cone needs to move excessively to make up for the tapering slope!
