Hey I have a 1996 vs commodore ute with a 5 speed getrag gearbox in it and was wondering if getrags can handle burnouts without blowing up?

The whine will just get louder and you'll destroy the dual mass flywheel. They can handle a tiny bit of abuse but I wouldn't push my luck with one.

They're good if low mileage unit but if you pop the box or even clutch it's just cheaper to go ford 6cyl t5 for availability.

In early days price of clutch kit made you wish you had something else.

Alot of people hated the sloppy shifts or worse if box got noisey on high mileage cars.

On par with t5 for strength...dual mass flywheel & factory clutch suck badly when abused.

What do you need to do to change from getrag to t5 gearbox?

Probably irrelevant, because you will end up dead, crashed into someone's house, or in jail before too much longer, if your main reason for getting a licence is performing burnouts.

Honestly if you drove the vehicle sensibly then the gearbox will last for the life of the car, subsequently if you are going to be a tool and do stupid things in it then I have to totally agree with Black-VXGTS's comments above.

Just hate wasting my time giving advise to someone that uses and abuses something without any mechanical sympathy whatsoever.
