ok so i filled 30 litres with 91 unleaded + a bottle of octain additive and managed 240kms city driving the other week ( with a fair bit of heavy foot in low gears at one point).
next i put 15 litres of unleaded 95 which i usually run it on and only got 80 or so k`s from that ( 40 of those k`s had 4 passengers which would have been about and extra 350kg or so).
i noticed a fair drop in power with 4 extra people in the car ofcourse so im guessing the engine was labouring a fair bit.
i cant do the math here , does a labouring engine really use that much extra fuel?

EDIT: i should add that the 80ks driving on 95 was granny driving as i had passengers and it was pissing down.

there is something wrong here! fully loaded car shouldn't make it labor, Ive towed a vq statesman with a vs exc v6 on a trailer and it didn't relay labor, i knew it was there but had plenty of power to pull it. 5 people in the car shouldn't be noticeable.

is your fuel gauge accurate? my vr 2 wagon gauge is all over the place down the lower end of the tank, which is what all my vr's and the olds vs do.

80km is only 40km less than the half of the fuel you used to get 240 out of 30L if you get what im saying

Sounds about right. My car runs great but even with my lard ass 120kg Cousin its noticeable, 0-100 probly adds an extra 1-2secs. Drivin around town startn n stoppin with that much weight would do it. Plus doesnt really sound like the car had enough time to adjust to 95 octane to get any economy benefit, but i may be wrong there. 1st Gear is horrible on fuel. I have one hill on my regular drive that by doin 90 i use 15% less fuel than at 70k, you really need to average over time to get an answer on how economic your car is. Temperature also effects it a fair bit, I find in summer i use nearly 20% less fuel cause car is running leaner and doesnt take as long to heat up for short trips

    does this sound right?

    yes but no
which 95 octane did you buy.
use only the big 4 95 Octane (BP, Mobil, Shell & Caltex ) cause the other crap stations pump out **** and alot of them with water or ethanol with the petrol.
I only run on 95 and get the same kays roughly under all conditions.
if i now put in 91 unleaded i will get 80kms less out of a tank. No S**t
95 is smoother and you definately get that bit more power, ie instantly no hesitation.
Dont why it would be labouring then, like moffman said somethig else might be wrong.....

God with those poor economy figures i'd be either checking and/or replacing your camshaft sensors, get an efi tune or seriously be looking at your auto's and change your driving habits. I've got a VS-II Esteem and driving it normally gives us a good 10KPL+ and that's in varied loads/driving. We've got lots of country/highways and sharp corners that go for many K's. When we put in 20 litres of fuel, we easily do well over 200K's on it. We test it time and time again, and we're really amazed by the economy on her. She's got 230,000K's on the clock and hasn't had a major service in some time but still drives real well and delivers good performance.

    regards!

Yeh I just reset my electronic fuel consumption each time I fill up and then watch that number climb to know when it is time to fill up again as the fuel gauge tends to be a bit all over the place

4 people in a car you are deffinaly going to notice it. I mean fully grown blokes would be an average of say 85-90kg each? include urself and u have an in car weight of like nearly half a tonne. So to say having people in a car shouldnt make any difference is a load. As for the fuel, check your zorst for black soot, give the inside a clean and then drive it for a day or 2. If its all sooty again and you know its not burning oil then its unburnt fuel and its O2 sensor time. My VR O2 sensor was rooted and the chrome tip would turn solid painted black within 4 days

I'm lucky to get over 350k's to a full tank.

Usually around 300k's in flat out chokkas bumper to bumper city traffic.

A car under load always uses way more fuel than a car cruising. even if you're light on the foot, stopping and starting is gonna kill your economy, you need long stretches of cruising.
