Power to weight is the best way to go.

You have to remember that anyone over 40 will still have in thier mind that "four cylinder slow, eight cylinder fast".
At the time that Kingswood you mentioned was new, a four cylinder Corolla would have only put out about 50kw, at best, maybe less. Now we have ordinary Corollas with well over 100kw, and other four cylinders which go harder than V8's of the seventies.

I love V8's (can't afford to run one is all...however, it ain't the petrol, it's the rego...:D), I love big engines of all sorts, but I also love thrashing...sorry son, "borrowing for a drive to the shops" my sons 1990 twin cam Corolla Seca with the 4AGE 100kw motor...and it is an 18 year old car...new ones are quicker again.

Wombat, what state are you in? In vic, it doesnt cost any more for a V8 or a 3 cyl, its all the same, but a Ute is cheaper than a sedan however :D

really thats awsome. thats the way the rules shld be in every state. i think its pretty unfair getting hit with big rego bills i dont see why it should cost more than any other car. ppl ask me how i afford to run my car with current petrol prices and its the same answer every time its tha insurence and tha rego that kills you. jus another way of stopping people from buying them i think

ive been driving a worked loud v8 on my Ps for 2 years now. No speeding fines, never been pulled over. I give it a squirt every now and then but mainly cruise around never speed on the roads. Its very simple to do. I wish the general public would view v8 drivers like me

    I'll say this:

"Hate the player not the game"

Translated for those who don't understand:

"Hate the bad drivers, not the cars"

People don't jump in V8's and the car suddenly the car starts doing burnouts and speeding all by itself. The driver controls the car and what it does. Don't ban powerful cars. It's simple. If ANY drivers (p plate especially) get caught doing something REMOTELY silly in a "high powered vehicle". TAKE THEIR F**KING LICENSE OFF THEM FOR 5 YEARS!!!!!

And i don't wanna hear all the bullsh*t pros and cons of doing that to drivers. Drastic times call for drastic measures. If you want results, you must apply yourself (actions like the one i just mentioned). I can't believe they haven't started doing something like that already. It's almost like they don't care if a few more people will die. Maybe they are hoping for a good year where HOPEFULLY no one kills anyone on the road.

It has happened before and it will continue to happen. ONCE CHANCE, IF YOU STUFF UP, YOUR OUT.

Bring that law in, and there may be some results. None of this demerit points bullsh*t, none of this warning bullsh*t. Plain and simple, in black and white, laid right in front of us all: CAUGHT ONCE BY POLICE VIOLATING THE HOON LAWS, YOU LOSE YOUR LICENSE FOR 5 YEARS. NO EXCEPTIONS WHATSOEVER.

Sure people will kick up a fuss. Tough ****. Obviously they don't care if a few more people die, because A) it didn't happen to them in the past B) they don't think it will happen to them.

Pigs a*s!!! They would change their bloody tune if someone close to them was killed by a hoon doing something silly in their car. All of a sudden they would turn around arms flailing calling for tougher penalties for hoons. Well stick that up your a*s, how about bring it in NOW so it doesn't have to happen to anyone else?!?! WHY WAIT?!?!

It absoloutly blows my mind that they continue to allow idiots to stay on the road after being caught doing something stupid ONCE. It f**king blows my mind and dumbfounds me beyond belief. But no, i guess building a giant building in the middle of Melbourne with gold flakes in some of the windows is higher on the agenda than taking the money that was put into that eyesore and moneywaste of a building, and putting it into something WORTHWHILE.

    Get f**ked.

    ****end rant****

(that post wasn't aimed at anyone in particular either)

I guess its a pretty hot discussion and we (pretty much all the enthusiasts on JC) will be on the side of "should be allowed to drive high powered cars" etc.

I do think there should be restrictions on certain cars for certain drivers. However, i dont like the "no V8s, Forced Induction" rule... Even the power to weight rule is ****....

Reason i hate it so much is the power to weight is based on flywheel power... Consider this...

Car 1 = Subaru WRX all wheel drive with 126kw/ton.
Car 2 = Toyota MR2 mid engine, rwd with 124kw/ton.

Car 1 is over the power to weight ratio, but i can assure you car 2 is a lot faster, and a lot more dangerous yet is under the power to weight ratio.

From memory, an AWD car losses around 45% of engine power through the drive train, meanwhile fwd or rwd (mid or rear engine) only losses 21%. I think Front engine/rwd is around 33%.

Also, cars lose power over time. While an old kingswood may have had 125kw when new, most will probably be 100kw or less....

Also you have to take into considering is how the power is delivered... just because a car has "more" power, doesnt mean its faster. Power curves play a big part as well... Look at an LS7 engine, produces something stupid like 300bhp from 1200rpm... right upto 4500rpm. Whereas some turbo cars etc will spike at more power, but be slower overall.

Basically i do like the idea of power limits for inexperienced drivers, however i think they need to be more technical.

Yeah but to the average mother and father who know nothing about how the power differs in cars, these laws look like they are the "be all and end all". If it pleases the majority who in all likelyhood know dick about cars then its going to stay.

It is a pity there isn't a wanker test for drivers. The amount of middle aged and old fart ******** drivers I have been saying of late is appalling.
Even police are getting worse, idiot officer decides to chuck a U turn in front of a car. The car that T-boned didnt even get a chance to hit the brakes. The ******** copper then decides he is going to try and have the driver charged.

If it happens, the driver who hit the police car has 4 witnesses who can say the police
    1. Didnt indicate, 2. Had no lights on 3. Wasn't wearing a seatbelt 4. Failed to give way

What hope do we have when even the people who enforce the laws can't follow them?
