Anyone else think they are useless? How is it more safe if I have a staring competition with my speedo rather than looking at the road?

I'm red P's so if I speed I lose my license anyway, but what do other drivers think of them?

My opinion is they are good because they are enforced over the holiday period when more people are likely to be on the road due to travelling etc etc. than any other given day, with Double Demerits in force you'll find most are more cautious which in turn means they are effective, I'm on my P's to, I tend to passenger around more during them so yeah..

Had too laugh, some P plater came round a corner doing maybe 70-75 in a 60 zone (big sweeper) there was a copper maybe 1 km up the road, flashed my lights- **** he hit the skids :)

Double demerit points have been proven to be a failure in decreasing the road toll in both NSW and QLD.

I think double points is stupid. Maybe double fines would work better. Who knows, no matter what you do people will speed regardless of how many points or how big the fine. Only thing that worries me is the cops making sure their cameras are calibrated properly only takes a knock and it can put them out.

and those are the people that will get caught out and have to suffer the consequences, the majority of people doing the right thing most of the time dont have to worry about it..

You can be doing the right thing and still get caught out. Got a ticket in the mail for 70 in a 60 zone there is no way I was. The cops always sit there at least once a week and everyone knows not to speed along that road. I always keep a sharp eye on the speedo. Can't do anything about it. So bye bye $100. Only one point though 11 more left so no biggie.

Don't agree with double demerit points. Laws should be consistent. Sure, vary punishment according to severity, but varying it by the day of the year is silly. There was less people on the road around here than a normal Friday, they were almost empty, so why was it more dangerous?

i think it should be normal demerits, but double the $ fine.
i believe money will slow people down before points on their licence will.

What a bloody stupid idea. speeding is ok for the rich?

What do the rich value? their freedom. Double demerits will take them one step closer to losing their license, and short of paying someone to drive them around, thats the idea, to get them off the road.

Anytime monetary value is the sole punishment, it just makes it a bigger punishment for the poor. I think it was minux who said in one of these threads, a fine based on your income, so that way its fair to everyone.
