1999 VS Commodore Ute
Hey guys, I’ve got a 1999 VS commodore Ute. And have recently learnt from the auto sparky that my fuel gauge sender is buggered. So at the moment I have no way to tell how much fuels in the old girl. And I know I have to have little fuel so I can remove the sender. My question is. Is there an easy way to drain the tank? By the way, the pump still works fine.

Only thing you can do is siphon off some fuel. There is no drain plug or anything like that.

If the sender is on the side like the sedans and wagons, just undo the lower 2 bolts and it will drain thru the bolt holes.

It is on the side but you have to access it from the tub. In reality you can have it 3/4 full if you're strong enough to lift it out.

you could bridge the fuel pump relay to activate the fuel pump and use a suitable hose from the outlet of the tank to drain into a jerry can

Tank has to come out on utes to get sender out.

Probably weigh 60kgs -70kgs if it's full so would need a helping hand to pull it out...if half full or less should be able to pick it up & slide it along tray.

Getting ute liner off if fitted & all screws for tank cover is more annoying.

Have fun if it's first sender unit you've taken out of a commo tank :D

Tbh I've never had sender unit fail so I'd be checking gauge & wiring first then sender unit.

I`ve just had the wagon drained and removed to have hoses changed.
I can`t give you the amount had other things done as well.
