Chasing a vibration which is most noticeable under load I found the driveshaft centre bearing is free to bounce around in the bracket it is mounted in. I had the bearing replaced, I guess about 2 years ago so disappointed it hasn't lasted longer.
When I look at replacement bearings on-line they just show the bearing on its own. Is it just a press fit into the bracket?

The bracket just holds the bearing to the body, its pressed onto the shaft. Buy a genuine Holden one Rob. The aftermarket ones cause problems.

Gen 1 and 2 Commodores (VB-VS) use a bolt together center hanger bearing bracket IIRC but VT on ward it is a combination bracket/bush/bearing as a single replaceable unit.

I believe the change occurred at VT II. VT I still uses the same bearing as earlier models.

I think the mech that did the job used genuine. Is it the bearing that has failed or the rubber surround?

The rubber is normally the problem with the aftermarket ones as they tend to flop around, unlike the gen bearing boot which has virtually no movement.

The bearing and is pressed onto the drive shaft, the rubber bush is held in a 2 piece bracket that screws onto the chassis. '

Check the bracket bolts haven't come loose.
