And whats the go with the preload on pinion on the diff I'm having to be very gentle changing gears

Ideally there should be no play. If you decide to replace it just make sure you mark the two halves of the tailshaft before you pull it apart so you can realign them properly for balance.

If there's something wrong with the diff it's probably more likely to be a backlash issue or cactus bearings rather than preload. Would try the tail shaft first as I think play in it would have a very similar effect in terms of feeling to a backlash issue.

Plan for the worse
Pulled it apart slightly loose bolts where tailshaft bolts onto diff
All seems ok new nuts and bolts from repco on Monday
