I went to wind up my window this afternoon and the fcuking thing exploded in my face! WTF! For a second I thought someone had shot at me! I have a spare door here so I can just use its window to replace the broken one in my ute. Has anyone ever replaced a window before? Are there any tips I need to know so I don't end up smashing this one too, whats the best way to go about installing a window? Also what could of caused it to break? Maybe is went of track and I didn't notice?
Exactly same thing happened to my dad in his XC Falcon. But it was a hot day and it happened when he closed the door. He didn't even slam it or anything.
is it power or hand window ?? there not that hard just take off the door trip take off the plastic then clean and take out all the crap from the smashed glass then fit the new glass in and make sure you get it on all of the clips i for got this once and the glass came out all retarded lol and grease up the plastic clips the push the window up. it will be better with to people as you can get one person to hold the glass as the other person puts in on the clips. good luck
Have you changed one before? Best tip I could give is have someone there to help, I've done it on my own and its a pain in the arse!! Grease the tracks up good so it all moves smoothly.
Do these have the regulators riveted in? If so, drill them out and replace with nuts and bolts.Use loctite so they wont rattle loose. Tempered glass has heaps of inbuilt stress. Was it cold outside? The rear window on Mums car blew out one cold night after she shut the door and was walking inside.
Yeah its about 4 degrees at my house at the moment, pretty cold. Its not a power window, and I have changed a broken window in my 4runner before but the windows are allot smaller so it was easy on my own. I will pull the door trim off in the morning and get my brother over to give me a hand if need be. Thanks heaps for the tips boys... I'll keep you posted. 304runner
its not a power window so youll be laughing, i just did the front guide rail rubber in mine, power window had to drill out rivets and use bolts two people definately helps
Especially since you have one already, I would replace the regulator (wind up and down bit) with the glass. (You will have to separate them for installation.) I have a vague recollection that there was a problem with early VN from the factory where the regulator bent and resulted in the glass breakage. You might also want to check that the Bailey channel rubbers (the bits the glass slides up and down in) are in place. They tend to work up and out of the Al. channels and sometimes they are just cut off rather than refitted. They can also twist in the channels. A little dab of glue at the bottom of the rubbers in the channels will stop the rubber from working its way back out.
Well the regulator was shagged. Bent more then a stoner on a Friday night. All sorted now, took about an hour on my own. Thanks for the help everyone!
