The battery has been playing up abit and not sure if it needs replacing.

Car wouldnt start took it for 1 hour drive was fine for the rest of the day then went to start it up and this morn it only just cranked over.
Its charging at 14.40 volts put the battery on charge takes 6 volts but within 1/2 hour its down to 2 volts.
Work is only 15min away so some days it doesnt get driven far.

Once last week it come up with a problem said see dealer then went away.

I know the VE has battery problems

Any tips would be great

Cheers

My brother had a battery pack in the boot of his VE while he had it. It failed around every 2 months. Holden could not help. New batteries failed to fix it - (yes more than 1 new battery inside 14 months).

You may be experiencing the grounding issue my Calais did.

In short, somewhere along the line it's not grounded and as a result the battery loses charge over a matter of 3 to 4 hours because its draining away or powering standby systems. This causes loss of all electrical systems, and sometimes sporadic system function (ignition on with error messages and traction, etc etc, but no ignition firing, just clicking).

To be sure it will need to see a mechanic, I believe they have received a notification for solution to this VE problem years ago, so they should be able to solve it quickly.

Sounds like alternator is working fine.

Either battery is not holding charge and needs replacing or something is drawing current when the car is not in use.

i've got the original battery in my 2008, and it runs just fine. Never had a problem, nor required to be checked by Holden. mine lives on the highway so gets a pretty good run every time she's fired up. Maybe i'm lucky?

get a multimeter and look for current draw when everything is off, (are there any aftermarket accessories installed?)
and if your earthing is poor, you will draw more current to run everything and this can contribute to killing a battery.

My work Sportwagon had a split in the bottom of the battery, probably caused by the surface it rests on not being entirely flat. This caused the electrolyte to slowly leak out. Symptoms were that the car was first hard to start when it was cold, or had been left for a couple of days, gradually getting worse until it had to be jump started, then it would start OK if within an hour or so of stopping it, but left any longer, it wouldn't start. Remove the battery and check to see if there's any liquid or calcium deposits under the battery.
