I don't know whether forum rules permit a thread of this nature or not but as there is already a thread that laughs at some dills who use E-bay, perhaps it's OK. E-bay recently circulated advice that they will soon include postage fees in the total cost of a sale when calculating their fees. I'm not sure what the percentage is that they charge for sales, but including the postage costs seems a pretty raw deal to me. E-bay say that including free postage is often an incentive to potential buyers, so not charging for postage will mean your selling fee is unchanged, but some items are damned expensive to post and there is no way you would just absorb postage costs if you sell something. I've used E-bay a fair bit over the years and sometimes felt that the selling fees were excessive. This latest grab for cash will probably see a few people turn to the alternative on-line selling networks like Gumtree etc. What do other members of the forum think of this change in E-bay fee calculation?
thats because people use to try and avoid the fees by selling an item for $1 and having postage at $100 so u still get the money and dont pay the fee they had a big crack down on it a few years back...
Their fee is 10% of what you made from selling in a month. Not sure about paypal's fee, I think it's around 5%. I've had a few free listings but lost about $60 in fee's so far.
im not to fused on the fee's myself, but more so that ebay/paypal are the same company and they make you bend over twice for one transaction. To make it worse it's not like you can opt out of paypal. At the end of the day they can do what they like now and get away with it, there is no competition of that size and has that many customers.
From what I recall, my fees have been around 5% or so?....ebay needs to stay in business, is listed company on NYSE? Anyway....just up the postage cost then. I always add a smidge anyway to cover cost of packaging and my effor in going to post office, waiting in line then posting it......
It's been a year or so since I sold anything on eBay, I still use it to buy things but when I sell I use gumtree. If they keep it up they will lose a lot of customers, capitalist dawgs. I wonder if we will ever see a company that doesn't f&@k their customers for a larger profit year after year.
Just FYI to the Gumtree guys, it is also owned by Ebay, it just has no fees. Surely if they can run Gumtree without fees, they can run Ebay with little to no fees?
Yes and no. I think eBay pays for Gumtree. Gumtree does not make a great deal of money... but I think it makes more then we think.
I've used eBay over the years, and used to enjoy both buying and selling. The selling bit now I'm done with. The fees are out of order. Paypal is also a real worry.
I bet it doesn't run at a loss. eBay aint no charity that's for sure. Paid, commercial ads are all over it these days. Having said that, its probably only a matter of time until fees start creeping into the standard ads. There are already fees for "non-standard" ads.
I am done with eBay. Will never sell on there again. Their fee's are criminal, and you get stung twice with the PayPal fees. Then to top it off, I got an email last week stating that they had forwarded my details onto the ATO because I had sold more than $10k worth of stuff. Had a massive shed clean out and sold a heap of parts that I would never have used anyway. Earned enough to buy another car. But now it looks like the ATO will come looking for their chunk. What really gripes me is that these parts were bought with my hard earned cash that I already paid tax on. So when I sold them, some I lost money, some I made a little. But yet the ATO is going to look at that $10k as 'income' and hold out their hand. So a BIG F.U. to eBay. Never again.
i had those massages the first few years they are just a generic msg sent out to anyone that earns over that amount, i have never had a msg/email/letter from the ATO yet and its been over 6 years now...
F'n thank God! I got the same email as I sold a lot of my retro gaming gear and was worried that the ATO was going to make me pay some big time tax.
We have a healthy account here at work that sells quite a bit of gear through eBay every month. The sellers fee's are not too bad depending on what subscription you have (As a seller). It will always depend on how much you sell. The more you sell, the cheaper it gets. However these days there is a shift market for it to be a more or less consumer bias shopping experience. Where as sellers needs are secondary, Especially when it comes to issues. One day i'll start a blog of all the ass customers I've had. But to this day I have always believed that the biggest let down on eBay is been unable to leave negative feedback for buyers. I've had a gut-full of buyers using feedback extortion to get their way. Even worse is the seller ratings (5 star). That can hurt you more than negative feedback.
