My mates VT Series 1 died the other night.
We have found a hole out the side of the block, and when we pulled the engine yesterday, found numerous bits of piston, rod and bearing sitting on the bottom of the now destroyed sump.
Oil was regularly changed with Castrol Magnatec, as was coolant. Has 220,000 kms on it

Are Ecotec's renound for crapping themselves? from what i have heard they are fairly robust and will go forever. We just cant work out why this one died..

    Cheers
    Dave

His Mrs was driving it, sitting on about 60/70kms on an unsealed road.
You cant go any faster if you tried on the road she was on!

The common name for what happened to you is called "Shot a Leg" or "Broke a Leg". This usually occurs when one of the Pins on the Conrod to Pistons breaks or comes loose and then the Conrod Bashes into the side of the block, breaking a hole in it. (Usually a little smaller that a golf ball). It can happen anytime. My mate had a car he was just driving down his street, almost home and it did the same thing. Just bad luck.

Magnatec Sucks. I Used it in my VS and found the engine knocked in the bottom end. Always stuck to Shell 10w/30 or 10w/40. Never had a problem.
My mate has a WRX and he uses Magnatec and his engine is now knocking. I told him it was the Magnatec. He now uses a Shell oil. He wreckens its a bit quieter now!!!

strange my mate bought his vt at 150k its now up to 308k and he's thrashed the crap out of it, so maybe they just need to be treated like a hoe?
