please help: my 1996 s2 ecotec is pinging under load have tryed buying fuel at different places still no good;premiem seemsto help a bit do these engines have a knock sensor and could this be the problem thanks
Yes, the ecotec has two knock sensors. You can test their operation by having the engine idling, and using a hammer, belt the alternator bracket with a quick sharp blow, the sound produced is the same as when the engine is pinging, if the engine revs dip slightly after you tap the bracket, your sensors are working. Alternatively, you can check for error codes and see if anything has been logged in the ECU. Perhaps also check your leads and plugs, make sure they are correct and in good condition... Maybe also try running some fuel injection cleaner or top end cleaner, might help clear things out, especially if there is excessive carbon stuck in the combustion chamber.
