firstly i know very little when i comes to diff's - so if this question seems stupid then im sorry.
but can a EL XR6 diff be put into a VS? im pretty sure the falcon is live axle just like my VS and i had a feeling they are both borg warner diff's...so is it possible? even if only the diff centre - the lsd and diff gears.

I know there's a ford which uses BW78's, but unsure which model.

EDIT: Ford started using the BW78 on the XE mid run, but using the 2 pinion centre. housing is no good for us though, apparently, this went on through to the BA, but only V6, as they used the BW80 on the V8.

so in plain english, it appears you can. go to "the other" commodore site, click powerplay, diff/trans, then "the ultimate diff thread". it's all in there

that would be fuggin sweet if i can, i found a el xr6 diff for sale and its dirt cheap...lsd and 3.45 diff gears all in one, so it saves mucking around.
ill have a geez on "the other" site.

ive search around and waded through pages and pages of diff info on about half a dozen different sites....i still dont seem to have a concrete answer.
from what ive gathered the diff from a EL xr6 "should" be a 4 pinion 28 spline diff, but i cant find anywhere that says whether they are a 78 borg warner or not.
at the moment i think i just take a punt and see if the centre will go into my housing on the VS. but if anyone has any thoughts they are very welcome.

i'm pretty certain that it's the borgwarner 78 diff so you should be able to use the diff gears, LSD center etc. don't think the housing will be of any use as i think the mounting points may be different and also the width may be different too.

Holden changed from salisbury to the borgwarner during the VK series, early VK's hadthe salisbury, later model VK's had the Borgwarner. not sure what the IRS commodore use but liveaxle setup is definitly borgwarner

yeah, from what ive been reading the EL was one of the last models to get the 78....so hopefully it'll be ok. if its doesnt work ill live, its only $200.
my thoughts are to just use the lsd, and carrier from the XR6 and use my diff gears and housing.
i was going to use the XR6 3.45 diff gears, but ive been reading about how much of a pain it is to get the speedo to be corrected and then have the shift points still ok...something i cant be stuffed doing. its the lsd i really want anyway.

what do you mean? are you talking about whole diff or just the centre (lsd and carrier) that wont "bolt in".

well holden used the BW M78 right up until the VS. VT-VY got the M76 and M80 no idea what's in the VZ or VE.
also, I read that ford use the BW M78 right up through the BA model aswell, but in both cases they could be wrong

yeah, ive read similar things man, not too many people seem very confident about when the 78 was stopped being used in the falcons, but i think its safe to say in was used in the EL era.

there should be some sort of marking on the diff to identify it maybe? i'm pretty sure if seen the borgwarner name cast into the housing somewhere, maybe there will be a model number too somewhere else

    B-series Falcon diffs are DANA.

If you really want to know talk to the e-series boys on Australian Ford Forums they know for sure.
