My check engine light (CEL) has always been on in my 2000 wh statesman caprice so I ordered a usb scanner. I used Obdwiz and it connected straight away and I can see rpm, temperature, oxygen sensor. I checked for trouble codes and there are none and it says CEL is off. The CEL is always on but it says there are no trouble codes. I even tried different software and it says engine is fine, no codes. The car runs fine, so I guess the CEL lamp is bad. I tried the usb on another car and it works good. My usb scanner is elmscan5 compact with obdwiz software. Another thing I monitored was temperature. My fans kick on at 108 celcius just below the halfway mark. Accentil said that it should turn on at 104 but mine turn on at 108. It does not snow here everybody puts pure water here in the radiator. I think thats my problem I should put coolant, what do you think. (I just put a new radiator in and it runs great!)
Definitely put coolant in, if you use plain water corrosion can cause damage later on. It is hard to find a scanner that is compatible with LS1. I bought one and it gives readings for RPM, speed , temp, and many other things but it also says there are no trouble codes when I knew that there were trouble codes at the time.
