VX S pack (Devil Yellow)
I used shell helix forever. 10W 30 I think.
I changed because I read that a thicker oil would quieten noisy lifters It didn't. I eventually went back to the helix. Better, but not 100%.
I then gave the engine a decent oil flush. Now back to 10W 30 and lifter noise has all but gone. It has 340,000 k's on it. I have owned since 17,000 (less than a year old).
To flush it, I bought a quanilty oil flush (nulon) and followed the instructions to the letter.
Except at the end. Instead replacing the filter and refilling with the correct oil, I didn't replace the filter (yet) and I refilled with a 5W oil I had lying around. I used that to flush the rest of the black oil residue out after the first flush.
Let it warm up , let it idle for 10 - 15 minutes. Then drained the 5W (now black) oil and replaced the filter. Fill with the correct grade of oil.
After about 3,000 k's the oil was still honey coloured and the engine is quiet (by ecotech standards!)

Heavy oils can clog the fine orifices in the lifters and make the noise worse.

use a 50 grade
At 113 000 km's the car will not need any sort of 50 grade oil not unless the motor is rattling it's head off at the most it would require a 15w/40 or 10w/30 oil just go the best oil in the brand you prefer to use.

holden only used 20/50 in both v6/v8 upto vts2 and with the ls1 v8 and that used the lighter oil so they put the same oil in the v6 less hassle for the dealers

What if your car doesn't have this magical book? After all, the VY is 16 years old and books seem to disappear with this length of time

I most certainly didn’t get my VY with these magical/mythical books either. They tend to get lost....
