engine oil leak behind oil filter

I have an oil leak on my vn v6 near the filter itsthe hosuing of where the filter screws onto I don't know what this is called and never pulled it off before would like to know what it is acutlaay called and if I pull it off will I have to reset anything ie if its a oil pump gear and has anyone done it before the leak is pretty bad thanks

Would more than likely be the oil pump gasket.....not hard to change, but if its anything like the V8 pump the gears can sometimes fall out when you remove the pump so you will need to follow proper procedures in re priming pump before it all goes back together......but remember the oil pump is the heart of your engines oil pressure, without oil pressure even for a few seconds can destroy an engine so if you have any doubts let a mechanic do the job.


Another common please to leak is the oil pressure switch (the small sensor near the filter with some wires going into it), thats an even easier fix so look there too.
