Go to the Shell Site, Australia, go to the helix section, on the side there is a link to the Techinical data sheets and MSDS. All in there. The Shell Helix is Semi synth, GRoup 1 and 3 blend, with some Ester in there, So Group 5 ester, Group 3+ Slack wax and Group 1 mineral. At $28 average pretty decent, and it is a SL rated oil. (Even quicker, email Shell for the specs, they send it straight away). Nulon 15w50 is Group 3 full synthetic at around $56.
i have elf in my vz sv6...best u can get. My dad gets it from his work.just order's in the one i can us, and it's free:whistling
I hear people make comments like that all the time, but WHY is it the best? What makes it the best you can get? Please don't think I'm not picking on you and I'm not doubting you. I just want to see stats. What name and grade is it?
It's called ELF EVOLUTION SXR 5W-40...just good for stop and start operations and short trips and 4 high performance vehicles.. cost's about $120 for 5 litres
This gets a bit annoying when it's not the best you can get. As not 1 oil suits every application. I certainly wouldn't be using it in my high performance motors, as I use the best oil suited to them.
You use your best oil...i will use my best oil.... It just that oil is better for my driving style. short trips, stop and starts.
For VZ engine the SRX may be best, for previous models Elf Excellium 10W50 is the best one. THis was also the factory oil to Subaru WRX until 2003 or so, not sure about now. It was still owned by GM at that time. ELf is gonna change soon to Total i think. Not a bad oil, pretty expensive and hard to find. For $120, just not worth it for what it is. You start moving into Redline oil territory at that price which is a well tried and tested oil. At 1/2 that price, Pennzoil Platinum-Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 or Motul Excess 5w40 would leave it for dead. Just too much user and proven data to show their worth.
It seems the only OEM specs it passes are for Renault. MSDS also shows it to be a Severely refined mineral oil, making it a Group 3 Hydro-cracked synthetic, way too expensive at $120. Would you have a MSDS on it by any chance ? Maybe different version here, but usually an imported oil. For $120 for 5 litres your looking for an Ester based oil like Redline and Motul.
Scooter, that's all threads about oil are ever about, all hearsay. My recommendations, dont use Penrite, and I dont say that based on hearsay, pm me if you want details.
Commsirac, how u been mate. I am not even going to comment on what Commsirac says about Penrite oil, always leads to the same argument. I am sure that car engines may have failed with nearly any engine oil in it. The trouble is proving it is the oil and getting the oil company to admit it as well as repair your engine, which most will do in any case if its the oils fault, including Penrite. It doesnt take them long to prove it either way. All oils have been there, done that, Pennzoil had a bad wrap back in the day with sludge claims, when it was mainly engine design and user negligence. It is now one of the best oils, most popular oil along with Mobil is the U.S. The fact is, its barely even changed, but engine design has improved. Mobil 1 is currently getting belted, getting lashed by Castrol and Valvoline in the engine wear advertising wars. Royal Purple, (which i am not fond of) have been put in the corner like a naughty kid by oil and advertising regulators, to stop telling lies about its oil performance. Fact remains, 1 engine possibly damaged by Penrite, thousands out there using it without a flaw for the long life of the engine. What would disappoint me about Penrite is if it lies or tries to cover up something, as it may have done in Commsirac's situation. Older friend of mine who fixes up Vintage cars, bought a rebuilt v8 engine from Repco filled with performance goodies. 6 months later the engine dies, wont hold compression etc. Goes to Repco, blames the engine, so Repco take him to the tribunal. Repco got its gurus to do an oil test, found advanced wear and silicon in the oil. Stripped down the motor and saw clearly where the engine had worn, how and so on. My mate knew all along but denied everything. 'What as happening is that the air box was not sitting at the correct level in the bay, so when he closed the bonnet, it pressed on the air box causing un filtered air to pass in wear the rings and pistons out. So off course he lost, but Repco offered to rebuild it again, no warranty obviously but he just had to pay for parts, no labour. At the end of the day, they can find out anything.
The fact is ladies and gentleman, he cant comment because he has taken the trouble to find out what Ive said about it. he wants to feel your heads with nonsense and argue about "pies in the sky":whistling:whistling
lol..sorry Commsirac, i would never give you that satisfaction. :yeah: We ended on a good note the last time, lets keep it that way.
Commercial synthetic ? So what magical brew are you using ? We can say what we like about commercial, but remember its the commercial guys, Mobil,Shell, BP etc. who are pulling the oil from the ground in the first place and supplying the base oils to everyone else. Those commercial guys also have a oil additive wing, who supplies to everyone else and each other when one invent a good additive. The quality comes down to how its blended, quality of additives used, other goodies added, and how much the oil is tested in a lab and the real world. I dont see Ferrari F1 walking up to a small botique oil company to look after its needs. At the end of the day Penrite and Nulon are two small Aussie companies trying to make it against the others, and they are doing a pretty good job of it.
Repco oil... Rebottled Mobil After changing the intake manifold gasket last week I was looking for a cheap (but not crap) oil to do me another 2000kms until I do my 190,000km service. The following is what I considered: Shell Helix Plus 10w40... $38 per 5L Havoline synthetic blend 10w40... about $30 - $38 (but no one stocks it) Penzoil GT performance 10w40... $41 (Repco 20% off but out of stock) Mobil 2000 10w40... $38 Now all the above are semi synthetic, group 3 base oils (vxcalais_01 might correct me on that), The when looking around in Repco I looked at the Repco brand oil. They have a wide range of viscosity. Ranging from mineral, semi synthetic to full synthetic. I had a close look at the Semi synthetic 10w40 and has an API rating of SL and ACEA rating A3/B3. To top it off it was only $32.99 for 5L I asked at the counter who makes their oil (knowing that Repco don't own an oil refinery) and was informed it was re bottled Mobil. Makes sense as it comes in a red Mobil shaped bottle and the pull out spout that only Mobil have. As the person behind the counter said "Most people think it's **** oil until you tell them it's actually Mobil and even then they still want to argue about it because the average person has no idea about oil" Changed the oil and filter tonight and seems to be running very smoothly. Seems like good stuff. I should mention that I have been using only Nulon 10w40 synthetic for quite a while. On another note I picked up one of those cheap 'Generic' oil filters from Supercheap for $4.99. There's no brand name, it just says 'Oil Filter'. When I took the old Ryco filter off I compared the two and they were EXACTLY the same. The only difference is the colour and the labeling. Both are also made in China so I wouldn't be surprised one bit if they both come out of the same factory.
Hey man, a couple of pages back vxcalais_01 stated that Repco oil is indeed re badged Mobil oil. But I never knew they had semi syn and synthetic oil, maybe the Repco I go to doesn't stock it yet. And vxcalais_01, have you heard of an oil company called Mainlube? I've read some posts (The dude posting seems to be the manager of the company) on other forums and the poster is always proclaiming how good Mainlube oil is. From what I gather from his posts is seems to be pretty expensive oil. Care to comment?
im just wondering atm im using mobile 1 5 -50 in my 3.8 v6 its all good at my next oil change im thinking of either using penrite or nulon ive used other nulon products and they have all worked very well which u think i will be better off using engine oil wise penrite or nulon? anyone had personal exp with these good and bad?
