If money is not an issue get this stuff SAE 20W-50 100% SY! SYN JIGH PERFORMANCE MOTOR OIL $72.60 for 3.7 litres, expensive stuff, but its Amsoil at the end of the day..... even then though the Delo 400 at roughly $35 for 5 litres trumps it in my opinion....... burnsy150-You are the second person who has said to me money is not an issue on these forums...grrrr even in these hard economic times, Kevin Rudds cash handout has done something good for the car industry... then again it is our car, like children never let them go hungry hehe. Good luck.
Hey vxcalais_01, thanks for all of your info and input, I wanted to know in your opinion what oil would you recommend using in a LPG vehicle? Cheers.
saber, i have an lpg vehicle as well. Whichever oils i have mentioned are good for lpg. If you want specifics, give me a price range etc, size/age of your engine etc. There are many very good oils out there.
Thanks mate. Currently I drive a VY executive on SVI lpg. I was reading another thread in the VY forum; you recommend using Mobil Delvac MX 15W-40, so I guess I will give that a try next oil change. My old man also wants me to do his oil change in a (sigh) BF egas Falcon which has done 60000kmls. Could you recommend me an oil? The service manual states 15w-40 oil, 6.6L refill. Price wise, from $40-50 per bottle (he is paying for the oil, but it will take 2 bottles to get the job done). I'm guessing the Mobil Delvac MX 15W-40 would be suitable as well? He wants to keep it for 15000km, which is the recommended interval change, will this oil last that long? Is there any other oils you would recommended (mineral or synthetic)? Also, what are your opinions on LPG specific oils? Eg Penrite HPR Gas 10, Castrol Gas, Shell Gas ect ect? From what I've read, these oils have special compounds which break down nitrous acids which are produced in higher quantities in LPG running engines. Some claim its all a marketing gimmick, others claim you should only run LPG specific oil in LPG running engines. Whats your opinion on this? PS: Are you a Chemical/Petroleum engineer or something to that effect?
Saber, i am an engineer, but not in that field. When it comes to oil, i am just stock standard, i just read alot, and talk to and know people in the oil field. Mobil Delvac MX will suit both your cars. Get the Repco Diesel 15W40, in the 10 litre bottles. Few dollars cheaper but exactly the same as Delvac MX rebottled. The LPG specific oils are marketing, they are basically diesel oils with a high petrol rating, SL being the usual. I have used 2 or the 3 you mentioned. You will know the Penrite is SL/CG-4. CG-4 is the third current Diesel Spec. Shell doesnt even label a petrol spec if i can recall, its certainly low, with a high diesel spec. The Diesels produce alot of biproducts, more than what a petrol car does. So these oils are designed to handle the extra soot, biproducts etc. I think the nitrates are common with lpg due to the excess water produced from the combustion process. You want an oil with a high TBN, with the Penrite LPG one of the highest in the whole range, or a standard TBN with quality additives and base oils which can resist the breakdown and effects from the lpg bi products. Most top quality oils can do this, will all say LPG compatible etc. Mobil Delvac and Castrol Delo are tried and tested oils in mixed fleet use. They are made from high quality base stock, mainly group 2 hydrocracked, with the best additives available. No matter what anyone says, these oils are guaranteed to work and have been tried and tested years and years. An oil with a SL/CI-4+ rating is immensly superior. Being Diesel/Mixed fleet spec oils they are designed for long drain, and i would use it in your dads car easily for 15,000k's and yours with the smaller sump 10,000k's. From oil testing i have done, it does seem LPG really knocks the car and oil around.
Um, whats a decent oil for an Ecotec on a trackday ? I'm guessing you will say something heavier than 20-50? I have 2 choices without going shopping, shell helix plus ( High Mileage), or Valvoline XLD Hi Vis 25-60. ( used to be XH60 i think ?) from memory the Valvo.. has a crappy SG rating, but for short term the rating should not matter right ? That TV add for castrol kind of demonstrates that ... theres a difference between a quality - clean oil, and one that will give good protection at high strain for a fairly short period of time..
trackday...... ULX-110 or Redline and Motul 300V(ester based oils). These are racing oils. Shell Helix Racing 10W60. It doesnt necessarily have to be a thicker oil. Mobil 1 can be used, Pennzoil, Valvoline VR1 Racing, they all have their race specific oils. What you need to determine is which ones you need to change after the track day, which ones can stay in for daily driver plus odd track day which most can when using standard fuel etc. Methanol/Alcohol fuels are what kill it with only a few and ULX i know for certain can run with it. Some of the others can as well, RoyaL Purple racing oils etc, Amsoil, Brad Penns they all have em, different kettle of fish now....Even Castrol Edge is used at the track, Havoline Premium 20W50 for like $27 a bottle was used by a few V8 racing teams straight off the shelf as you would get it as Safeway Servos......
OK , I'll check out the Havoline Premium at i guess Caltex in NSW ? You wouldn't recommend Durablend or the cheap Repco RO-SL ?
well, after all that i ended up using penrite HPR 30 20W60 on trackday. It ran real smooth and and handled the scorching heat of the day with no worries. A note for anyone looking to buy Valvoline Durablend, buy it from Auto one as its about $31 there, compared to everywhere else where its about $40. I also noticed that many of the Castrol Edge oils are now SM rated ! is this a recent upgrade ?
I've used many different oils in different cars, but i cant go past Royal Purple.Expensive, yes, but the engines worth it.
Valvoline in every sump. Valvoline oil and fuel filters too. XLD Engine Armour is a fantastic product, used to sell it to all the V6 owners back in my Repco days.
maah, i tried engine armour in my V6 ages ago. My engine drank it like lolly water so i had to keep topping it up. Didn't use it again. 15W50 minimum for me in an ecotec.
Odd, mine has never used a drop. Actually annoys me when I have a few hundred mills left over every time I do an oil change.
I used that stuff twice in the VP. I couldn't complain much about it. I was **** scared using a 15-40 in such a high k car also.
lol, i know what you mean. Ecotec should run a 5W40 comfortably. anything above should be no prob. Some people think an oil burns when they change to something new. It takes a while for the new oil to settle in, sometimes only by the 3rd change....
