How about dropping in an L67 conversion? You can get a low km L67, gearbox, wiring loom and computer for under $4k and it will give you the power of a V8 with V6 fuel economy and registration costs. It will drop straight into a VR body :)

The supercharged ecotec engine. Many, many people prefer them to the 5 litre V8's due to better low-end torque and same power. :)

As above post. I traded in my ecotec powered VS for a VS Calais with the L67 in it and I seriously can not imagine a car I would rather drive. So much torque and that delicious whine coming from the intake.

Theres many many V8s out there, but I am so glad to be different in this case... There are far fewer Super 6's so I think people probably tend to pay more attention when you say you have one.

I considered converting my previous car to L67 but it proved cheaper and more beneficial to just trade in for one that was already supercharged. Before I abandoned the idea I had an arrangement with Redcliffe Wreckers who were going to sell me a motor + gearbox + loom + computer for $4000 from a stato that had 70,000 k's on it.

Probably not the best price but I had to phone every wreckers in the phone book to find somewhere in Brisbane who had all the gear, but they told me they get them often so I imagine when you find the right wreckers it wouldnt be too hard to get one.

Also if you like to go fast then check out FIT's web site http://www.v6supercharged.com.au they specialise in this motor. Theres lots of reading on there that will show it is quite possible to get 300kW out of it without even changing the engine internals. This is the site that convinced me to get an L67 one way or another.

Anyway I could prattle on forever singing the praises of this motor and I imagine so could others on here who have one, such as sixshooter and Brent (username: "Charg'd (sexy vn chick lover)"). Seriously worth considering if its within your budget.

Ive always always always thought rebuild. you know exactly what you are getting.

tho a new/crate motor is a good alternative too. Reco i wouldnt touch with a 40 ft pole.

Ok i have already been give the "clip over the ears" for mentioning to spend 4k on the engine upgrade..... and i see her point, cos i also would rather put the money towards my EH ute project....

So the cheapest( not always the best) seems to be the option that i will be taking.... (only cos we still need a family car and love my VR, other wise i would sell)
