Just a quick question. I am looking at buying some 18's but cops generally defect even the smallest mod these days so I would like to get them engineered. Has anyone gone through this process or knows exactly what has to happen? Do they just do the wheels or the whole car? Cost is around $300-$400 from what I've heard, but cost is not much of an issue cos I want these wheels but not the hassles. Thanks in advance Nick
I was looking at 19's on my vt (15" stock) and i called 'wheelworks' they quoted $415 to engineer cert on the wheels. Although they did say alot of police wont give 2 ****s about your certificate and just defect you anyways. i ended up going with 17's until they hopefully change the 2" rule
yerp im runnin 19" on the vn and there big, good idea keep 17" cheap tyres and cops will leave you alone
Hmmmmm, yeah I guess your right. Might look into it still, is wheels a cop shop defect or regency? Do wheel works only do the wheels they sell or can you bring in a set and get them to engineer them?
you can bring in your wheels and they will inspect them and hopefully give you your cert. Any defect can goto regency, its up to the policeofficer to tick if they want a regency inspection or a simple cop shop one. Usually a rim defect will be a cop shop defect but like i said there is nothing stopping them from ticking the regency box
Fair enough. Thanks for the info guys positive rep for both. Everyone feel free to add to this cos the more info the better. Cheers guys.
Just for the record, Wheel Worx themselves will not engineer the wheels, they will get an engineer in to do it there. I enquired there re: my 19's as well as the wheel and tyre centre on Prospect Road. Not sure if they take commission from that, so better off ringing Transport SA and getting in contact with an actual engineer on their own. As in this thread, the going rate is around $400 (quoted from wheel places), I wouldn't pay more than that. They should give you a new tyre placard and all the paperwork to go with it. But as said, you CAN still be defected and you WILL still have to pay to have the defect removed. However, you won't have to change the wheels if thats a bonus as once you take it down they'll look at the paperwork and say it shouldn't have happened and you're off (after you pay). Thats the probem with the defect system. And the 2" law in SA should be gone within a few months so I would suggest hanging out until it has changed. Also, all they look at are the wheels, but depending on clearance to guards etc. and width of the wheels they can also issue new minimum eye brow heights for the vehicles ride height (which will be higher than stock I would assume).
Wow the south oz laws seems pretty harsh and I thought W.A. was bad. Im running 19s on my VS and have had a few cops do the old swing around and follow me routine but never have I been pulled for them yet. I heard with the 20's on the VE that the laws were changing for all commodores and up to 20" wheels would be acceptable. Maybe this was just some crazy rumour.
