Hi guys, can anyone shed abit of light on what an error 42 could be, with a '98 VT?.. know it means "electronic spark timing bypass circuit" which means????????????..Its just recently been serviced and the engine warn light started to come on and off just after that(AS they do :-S) It doesnt come on all the time and does go off at times by itself while driving and goes off and stays off for awhile if you tur the key off and restart.

DFI module or coil pack issue generally. Check the connections around there are in properly first and that the coil packs are on the module flush.

are you having any spark issues, like missing under load? if not id just check all the connectors to the dfi, a new dfi board usually sells around $100 - $150 mark.

It does seem to miss abit unload but not a great deal.. will check the connectors and that and see what happens.. The other half who drives it the most said the light hasnt been on in a few days and seems to be running ok.. rekon i'll do what you said, then reset the service code and take it from there.
cheers The1 :)

yeh just check the connectors, then pull the engine fuse in the engine bay for 30mins to reset the ecu and go from then, check for codes again in a while.

Hey Mr the1, i just check and re connected the connectors. seems ok although the engine light hasnt come on today anyway. while fiddling, i did find though that the number 3 plug lead which plugs into the coil pack is very loose. EG while the others take abit of force to pull them off, this one comes off very easy. do you think that this lead being abit dodgy could be causing the ecu to register this problem??

prob not the ecu, but could be causing the slight miss sometimes. It may just but the clamp inside that need squeezing in a bit, but if you havn't replaced the cables in the long while prob a good reason to change them all for new ones, do your spark plugs while your at it.
