Who in Australia can legally drive at 184 kph? Answer, no one...

A multi speed geatbox will result in the need to carry an extra 30 or 40 odd kgs for no other reason than top speed bragging rights

If you're going to carry extra weight, id rather two, three or even 4 smaller motors for software controlled 4x4 with torque vectoring ;)

Yeah. I’d rather delete the 40kg gearbox and be happy with a lower top speed, after all it’s not like your building a vmax car.

So we agree that it needs to be geared appropriately.

The EV I took for a thrash accelerated like a mad dog, but rate of acceleration really tapered off in the upper rpm range (probably the last 15kph before max of 184) and any more low range would have realied alot heavier on electronic aids. A 2speed box would have put it up to 250+ but obviously added weight and complexity.
Pretty sure it was a 24000rpm motor with gear reduction to put it in the right range.

I don't know enough about the Tesla to compare.

Okay, with figures from here: Holden VE Commodore Specifications

Tyre Size = 245/40R19
Tyre Revolutions = 469 per km
Diff Ratio = 3.45 : 1
6600 RPM in 1st Gear (3.01 : 1) = 81 km/h
6600 RPM in 2nd Gear (2.07 : 1) = 118 km/h
6600 RPM in 3rd Gear (1.43 : 1) = 171 km/h
6600 RPM in 4th Gear (1.00 : 1) = 245 km/h
6600 RPM in 5th Gear (0.84 : 1) = 291 km/h
6600 RPM in 6th Gear (0.57 : 1) = 429 km/h
6600 RPM in Rev Gear (3.28 : 1) = 75 km/h

So the VE V8 does 245kph at 1 to 1 ratio at redline of 6600rpm. The Tesla motor “redlines” at 18000rpm so the theoretical top speed is 668kph. Dunno about you but I’m perfectly fine with that!

Jam all batteries & driveline in back of a ute...do wheelstands at traffic lights.

Not really into the EV cars but find Ev trail bikes impressive how compact, fast & silly shite people do on them
