Hi Guys, I've found a 03 VY II Berlina with 45ks on it for a really good price. The catch is it is an ex Avis rental car. The interior has a few nicks & scratches on the doors; radio buttons are a bit worn down looking but the engine sounds OK. It's still got factory warranty + Holden certified used car warranty on it. So, what do you think? Would it be trouble due to the thrashing it's most probably had? Has anyone else bought an ex-rental VY and got any stories? Thanks for the input, - John.
Hmmm, on the plus side it should be had for less than 24k, I wouldn't pay anymore than that, the life it's had may only be 45,000k's and less than 2.5 yrs old but I bet it was a hard 45,000k's anything ex government/rental ppl dont give a **** about it, not their car they don't have to replace anything if it breaks down. Just think really hard about it before buying, but you are after opinions and my opinion is stay the hell away from it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As for the warranties pffttt the used certified warranty isnt worth the paper it's written on. Only the drivetrain is covered in the factory warranty/used warranty, everthing else has a 2 yr warranty on it, which has most likely already expired.
well my 04 exec is an ex Avis rental. And like you, i was a little iffy about ex rental/gov. cars. Ive had the car for the last 2 months now, had 3 problems, one was a cracked headlight, the other was the common squeel of the belt and most recently one of the doors wasnt locking. All problems were fixed no questions asked under warranty. I think if you are getting the car at the right price you should go for it, little nicks and scratches in the interior are bound to happen over time and it's not always a sign that the car was mistreated, infact i think most people who hire out a berlina would be company execs anyway so should be ok. If i had the choice again id still get the car i got, just because its from a rental place doesnt mean its any more thrashed that buying from the ******** down the stree who doesnt look after his car, remember, not everyone looks after their cars like we (forum members) do. (edit: i got my car from a holden dealer who got it from the auctions, they gave me an extended warranty on the car, just a little extra bonus)
its 45,000 km on the clock, not 24, 24 was the price mentioned. Mine had 45K on the clock as well, must be their rotation period
Being a Berlina it may not have had the same thrashing as the Excutives that were hired by young "vehicle testers"...... I would have an inspection done and have any meachanical problems fixed under warranty. The engines are pretty tough nuts, unless it already sound rattly.
I saw a 12/03 VY Berlina with 37k on the clock also a 5.7lt V8 ex guvie for 21.7k!!!!!dam thats cheap
Go for it, I bought mine ex guvie and while I have had things break on it the Holden new car warranty has covered 95% of the things.
I think differently. I always worry about how previous drivers have treated any car that I have looked at. Cars that have had many different drivers could be a worry. However, my observations have not shown government cars or rental cars routinely being thrashed. Some government cars have very easy lives because they are not city commuting cars. I have met people who thrash their cars. If they buy new, they seem to buy with the expectation that they will move the car on before it runs out of manufacturers warranty. My preference is to buy new, and keep it a longer time. Then I know the full history, and have a good run - except with another brand. I reckon if you buy a three year old car, you can safely keep it for about 4 years. If you buy new and look after it, you can get a very good ten years out ot it. The economics for both options are about the same. Especially if you buy wisely.
