Agree with Calaber about the P*ss weak warranty offered by Holden. Also the factory extended warranty is only as good as what the dealer or Holden will accept requires replacing or repairing. I am sure most Forum members have experienced difficulty in getting either the dealer or Holden to accept that the issue or problem our beloved Commodore is having needs rectification. Of course Holden and their dealers are alone in this matter.

Pretty cynical in my opinion. They built cars here for seventy years and never offered decent warranty periods. As soon as local production ceases, the standard warranty increases by two thirds. Weren't locally built cars good enough to have the confidence to offer five year warranties as standard?

Remember when Holden and Ford only offered 12 months / 20,000km warranty?

anyway, here is the goauto article:

Interesting article. So, for two decades we've had the three year warranty and I can certainly remember the old one year/20,000 mile warranty. It still indicates to me that all local manufacturers failed to keep up with their imported competition as warranties became increasingly generous and are now very important marketing tools.

A couple of years ago I purchased a new car from Holden. It wasn't locally built because the Commodore is no longer the most suitable car for us. The poor warranty was a consideration but the previous preference, a Sportage, with its seven year warranty, was eliminated because of the low passenger seating position and the high waistline. My wife didn't like it so it was out.

Now, only two years later, I'm into the last third of the warranty. I'd still have almost five years in that Kia. Big difference.

Warranties are a marketing tool ... maybe they felt the cost of offering that warranty wasn't worth the marketing payoff? --> and this marketing decision could have been made by the people who've been marketing Fords for the last decade-or-more ... Festiva being probably the best in it's class, who ever sees one on the road?
Falcodores of yore probably would've been expensive to cover for 5 years, they'd have had to come up with a way to keep the mirror attached to the windscreen for longer than a 13 months. :)
5yr/175k km warranties on Commodores were a pretty regular special-deal free-extra-cucked-in through at least 2015 & 2016, though.

I think that you will find the "sale" extended factory warranties have all been 5 years, 130K. Some dealers offer a so-called extended warranty out to 175K if you have the vehicle serviced with them. That warranty is in fact an insurance policy, and not backed by the factory.

I have had the 5 year, 130K factory warranty on my last four Commodores - my 2013 MY12.5 SV6 Z and current 2016 MY16 SV6 are still in my possession. The two VF SV6 in between were passed on with lots of the extended warranty left.
