Hi all, today I noticed the temp guage going up to about 3/4 after about 1/2hour of driving. when I got to work I had a look under the bonnet and sure enough on fan action. Today was the first time that I haven't had the air conditioning on so I hadn't notice a rise in the temp. When I disconected the plug on the temperature sensor the fans run as they should 1st and 2nd stage. The fan runs all the time with the air on. So do you think it could be the temp sensor, by the way my car is a vs ute .
my statesman has just started to do this too. today was also the first time I've had the AC off and noticed it was getting hotter than usual. sure enough I looked under the hood and thermo fan wasn't running. put the a/c back on and both fans came on. I looked for the coolant temperature sensor but I couldn't see it on the B3800. (I think it's supposed to be behind the alternator) for now I'm driving with the ac on to keep the car in operating range. I'll have to get a new sensor tomorrow.
Hi All, Today I replaced the temp sensor in my ute ,I also replaced both hoses while I was at it. the temp still goes to 3/4 before the fan comes on . Is this normal ?
In my ute my fans only come on when the A/C is on, whenever I'm in traffic or hot weather I always have the A/C on.
yeah I've been driving about with my a/c on to get the fans into gear too. it never gets above half though (new radiator, coolant, thermostat and recently flushed system) I picked up a new coolant sensor today from repco. asked my brother and he told me that the sensor should be behind the alternator on the B3800 and that you need to remove it to get to it. the car itself only has 160k on the clock so I wouldn't at all be surprised if it's the factory sender in there. is there a way to "trick" the car into running the fans without having the ac on? I'd just like to confirm that it is the sensor itself that's causing the issues.
If you unplug the coolant temperature sensor, the fans will run all the time. Only way to test if it's ok or not is to test the sensor's resistance at different temperatures. Better just to replace it. Should have approx 5V at the connector with ignition on.
cool I'll try unplugging it tomorrow to confirm that it's not the fan. I have a new sensor now so it will be going in too anyway.
If you can be bothered (or have the resistor in the parts box) you can place a 1/4W resistor across the CTS sensor plug terminals that has a resistance that matches that which will be on the sensor at 104C (or above). Off the top of my head I don't know what that resistance might be but I've posted the resistance vs temp. in the How To on manually switching a VN engine cooling fan.
Mate this is normal for a VS. If you want to drop the operating temperature you can install a 82c thermostate but you will have to get a retuned memcal so the fans come on early. I got mine from The1 on here car runs cooler. Here is the link to him send him a PM. http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/member.php?u=6017 Post 78 http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/vr-vs/88788-vs_pete_1-wagon-4.html
