I have just bought a level 3 cluster from ebay. It was supplied with the wiring loom and trip computer module (which is what I wanted it for). Anyway, after pulling put the whole dash and fitting the loom, I have discovered 2 problems. the first is that the plug for the A/C does connect, however the pin arrangement is different, and the wires are different colours. Reading the owners manual, some models have a security button.....could this be what this plug is for. The second problem is that the plug to the rear demister is also different.

Has someone else done this conversion and if so, what problems did you have ?

Can anybody offer me any assistance with this issue.

My car is a 94 VR acclaim wagon

Owners manual? I would get a Gregory's manual and suss out the wiring with that.
That's all I can say at this stage. Good luck!

ill help but i dont have gooid news..

ok, im not sure what loom you were provided with but its likely to be from a calais model of your car. The direct loom plug in wont work. The level 3 clusters have 4 input connectors 3 along the back and one underneath. You car comes stock with the three across the back but the calias models and those optionioned with the level 3 clusters have the fourth connector.

The fourth plug is mearly an adapter to the pre exsisting 3 connecotrs and it also allows for thr trip buttons to be included in the circut. What you have to do is match the PCBs from each cluster and then splice wires from the 3 back connectors to the new fourth connecor in able for it to work correctly.

The loom you have will be differnet because wagons/sedans have differnt wiring interms of rear demsiters and the a/c switch wil also be different due to climate control.

Rear the rear PCB and it should make sense as to what wires will need to be spliced together.

ITs not an easy cnversion to do, its not just plug and play

Sorry to break it too ya, youll have to do abit of ****ing around to get it to work.

    aZk.

First of all (to user wavez)......I actually did mean a gregorys manual (not the owners manual) sorry...

azkwazers.....thanks heaps for the advice....still trying to work out what it all means at this stage.

Anyway, I decided to put back in my original loom and put the car back together untill I can sort the problem out...I just cant bear to be without my A/C !!!

Once everything was back together, except for the original intrument cluser, I plugged in the new cluster (the level 3 one), and just sat it as best I could in the cluster recess....I did this merely for test purposes. SOme observations are as follows...

    - everything works on the cluster, but none of the fuel functions work (the display is there, but they dont change according to what the car is doing etc). ave speed, odometer etc all work fine, just the fuel side of things dont seem to work.
    - As I expected, the AC doesnt work using the new loom.

so......firstly, am I doing something wroog, or do I need to reset something to get the fuel functions of the trip computer to work ?

secondly....how do I resolve the wiring issue for the A/C & Demister ?....If i took my standard loom and the level 3 loom to an autosparkie, would he be able to 'cut' off both the A/C and demister wires from the original loom , and splice them into the level 3 loom ?

Is an appropriate loom not available from Holden ?

Any added advice or help would be appreciated.

The key to upgrading the loom is to get a loom that matches your year. ie a 94 VR L3 loom. If the one you have is not correct you can have more issues than not...

Second would be to get a spare a/c plug from the wreckers to graft into the new loom before you put it in. I get blank paper and draw out the wires and label colours for the bits that need changing ect.

Also the back of the cluster has the pin outs for the plugs. Look at what is different between the 2 clusters. That will tell you what needs to be changed like the cruise control or speed signal.

Dont give up it can be fixed - just may need to get a good auto sparky that has good wire diags of the VR.

    Have Done Conversion!

    Hi,

Firstly, I have done the conversion on a VS II. Well worth the effort.

Secondly, it is critical that you only use a VR or VS cluster. Using a VN/VP cluster without major wiring changes will just result is smoke as your money burns up in an electrical fire.

The good news is that the standard instrumentation will work with no wiring changes. Just plug it in, and away you go.

Of course, the main reason for going to a L3 cluster is to get the trip computer. This requires the infamous fourth plug, the trip computer buttons and a plug to fit the buttons. Both these plugs should be on the wiring loom that you bought. The requirement is to remove the necessary plugs from the wiring loom supplied with enough wire to allow them to be grafted to your existing wiring loom.

This is not a dramatically hard job, but not one to try if you are electrically challenged.

Good luck. You will be pleased when it is fully functioning.

Just a hint dont try to adapt a stato dash loom that had a high level bcm with the wiring for air con and heated rear window from your old loom....the dimmer wont work...its much easier to get a l3 loom and strip out the no 4 connector and wiring and mode switch plug and graft it on to your old loom. The good thing about grafting the wiring is you are joining wires from the l3 to other wires of the same colour in your old loom.
