Fitting LED illumination lamps to VF sun visors

I know this has probably been covered in another thread. But thought I would start this specific one to help others considering replacing the old incandescent festoon globes with LED’s in their sun visors. This is easy to do.

I bought these on feebay:

Here is the old and new:

These are 36mm/32 lumens/6500K/0.48 Watts but a bit fatter than the old ones, so will fit the VF sun visors (with only a minor modification). I couldn’t find any thinner festoon LED’s online, but who knows they may be out there somewhere.

6500K might be too white for some people, but I reckon these are more like 5000-5500k or so. There may be “warmer” LED’s available but I haven’t checked.

The trim piece/cover (with the mirror) under the flip-up sun visor lid, comes out fairly easily. Just use a flat trim removal tool of some sort (or a butter knife that’s not too thick) to pry one end up. Don’t be too rough, and put something like a bit of cloth or tissue under the tool so it doesn’t mark the plastic. Then just lift out. The two old festoon globes in each sunvisor are easy to get out.

Here are some pics of the mirror piece/cover removed showing the plastic tabs at edges:

You then just need to get a stanley knife (best with a new blade) and carefully cut away about 1mm of plastic at each end where the globes sit. Do this carefully, don’t use too much force and let stanley knife poke into the sunvisor etc. You only need to cut away enough plastic to allow the new LED festoon end caps to sit where they should so the ends/tips sit in the copper terminals (and not fall out). In these two pics, shown unmodified on the left, modified on right:

Then clip the mirror/cover back into place. Piece of piss!

Nice, thanks for the thread. I changed my other interior lighting to LED's, but the dome lights were way to bright. So I changed those to red. B.
