After searching around I couldn't find this fix posted anywhere so I thought I'd put it up. Anyone who's owned a VS would have at some stage dealt with needing a helper to push down on the bonnet to allow it to open, or stuck a custom cut wedge under the latch itself. Mine got to the point where even new cables would only last for a few weeks before it was back to the custom cut block of wood under the bonnet handle.
I had a close look and saw that the bonnet spring had chewed into the parent metal as shown in the first image I've posted. To address I filed up a bit of aluminium bar as a slot insert to put the spring back to it's original rest position. It's been a year now and the bonnet pops with minimal latch movement every time.
The dimensions suit mine and the slot cuts were basically a coarse hacksaw blade cut width.
Image #1 Worn parent metal.
Image #2 Sketch drawing.
Image #3 Insert installed.
Hope it helps someone out there.
