just wondering for the next time i do a service on me auto....how do i flush all fluid out or close to all fluid as there is like over 10 liters in there but only can change like 5 if that is it a matter of off with the cooler hoses ....put in a large container and start ..wait till it slows/stops then turn engine off? if so will this have any ill effects on auto? like seeing that it is emptied in the trans, will it pump the oil back up or will i have to prim it? as yeh the oil in there could do with a full change i guess cheers
You have to add trans oil as you drain it in proportion. You will need to have the transmission in drive in order for the trans to pump the fluid through the box and into the radiator. So you need to undo the transmission cooling line at the radiator and then fill the trans with fluid. You can turn the car off if you can't keep up with the fluid running out compared with what your putting in and then start it up again. Hope this helps
I thought you could have the line going to the radiator going into an empty bucket and place the line going from radiator back to auto in a fresh bottle of auto fluid? So it will draw in the same amount it is pushing out. Correct me if I am wrong. Maybe this is only for other cars and not Commodores. I know of people who have done it this way to other cars. If it can be done this way expect to run around 20L of fluid through it to clean it right out.
Just double check with your mechanic or an auto specialist that my method won't cause damage to the gearbox. I dont know if the pump works this way in our gearboxes.
This is not true. The instant you start the car in park fluid will flow through the trans cooler lines. So I don't end up with a massive mess I disconnect the cooler line near the raidator and drain that into a pan. You need to undertand that doing this still only empties the pan, not the torque converter. Drain most of the fluid from the pan without running it totally dry to avoid the mess. Drop the pan, clean, replace filter and reassemble. Now this is where it helps to have 2 people. As I refill with new fluid and the engine running it I watch for the dark fluid to turn bright red again. Once you see red fluid yell "Stop" to the 2nd person in the drivers seat. It will take a couple of stop/starts to keep any eye on the fluid level and you'll need a few bottles but at least this way you'll flush the whole system.
thanks..hmm i may just change the oil and filter and not worry about flushing it...would be good to flush it and change all oil but yeh i will some other time as it runs ok at th moment
Correct. I did a flush on the weekend. It is very hard to do with 1 person and in all honesty I wouldn't recommend that you do it. Take it to a trans place and get a flush done properly with the pump system they have. When I did it I did both 'P' and 'D' with the same results for flow so you can just leave it in 'P'. Although more fluid then that of the pan comes out. If you are going to do it yourself I think the best method (although a bit messy) is to buy a crappy brand pan gasket. Put it on the pan. Empty pan, put new filter in and refill pan. Run the car for a good few minutes then empty pan again and refill. Do the process all up maybe 3 times. You should be guaranteed that the only fluid you will have is red. This will also eliminate any chance of the trans running dry. My trans still works fine although occasionally on a hill I can hear the trans internals slightly (due to my attempt at a flush). You will be surprised how quickly the fluid comes out!
you wont flush all the fluid through the converter unless its done properly on a machine, otherwise just drop the pan and refill it as there wouldnt be much differance..
