Any ideas what the highway patrol will be driving once all the real cars are gone?

Well for $50k (or less) police can get about in these very tasty offerings.....

Subaru Impreza WRX
Ford Focus ST
VW Golf GTi
Mazda3 MPS
Toyota GT86

To call these 'not real' leaves me scratching my head....there are more drivetrain combinations about than RWD y'know....

This is just for highway patrol/pursuit vehicles. Pretty much any car will do for regular duties; these are A-B devices. Be prepared to see lots of Camrys. My LAC uses a Lancer as a general duties car.

One issue usually overlooked when forum members suggest suitable replacements for HWP vehicles is the interior space available for a minimum of two crew plus all the equipment their duties require.

A typical HWP car contains the following:

Radio - usually fitted within the glovebox.
Mobile Data Terminal - fitted to the offside of dash
Radar monitor
Two rechargeable Maglights - the largest and longest models, fitted to the passenger side of the centre console
Two baton holders - one per front door
Video recorders inside front and rear screens
Breach books
Alcometers
Two police during certain shifts (usually at night).

By the time you pack that lot in, there usually isn't much space left inside the cabin. Smaller vehicles such as the Rex etc, don't meet the requirements for police to perform long patrols in comfort. Occasionally, they also have to take passengers (often ones who don't really want a free ride to the local charge room) and the back seat is full of their jackets and various portable items not listed above. The boot is full of things such as the MDT console, Stop-sticks, "Stop - Police" hand signs, bullet proof vests and miscellaneous other crap.

So, once the larger locals go out of production, it will be very interesting to see what replaces them. In my opinion, none of those listed above will suit simply because they lack sufficient cabin space and their interiors won't accommodate all the specialised equipment required. It's a fine art fitting all the equipment into Police vehicles without butchering the interiors and ruining their resale value. Camrys are fine for General Duties and other specialised duties, and have adequate interior space, but obviously won't cut it for HWP.

I'm sure there will be a med/large FWD equivalent. Mondeo's are huge inside and the incoming Malibu will be nearly as big as a Commodore. There is also the Camry/Aurion as well.

The UK police force often uses Volvo S60 as a motorway cruiser. might be a bit exxy for our forces though.....a guy I worked with wwas with the Vic. Police in the 1980s, they trialled some V8 mercedes sedans; they performed very well and the great resale meant that to total life cost was no worse than a commodore V8......but the Vic. govt wanted to obviously favour local industry....

If its a highway patrol car you need something with a bit of oomph; you'd need to get 'whoever' to bring out V6/turbo models of whatever mid-size car they wish to use. Opel has a V6 Vectra 'I think'.....

Or, the HWP needs to ask - 'do really need to take all this **** with us?'

You're thinking of the Insignia - it replaces the Vectra (which isn't made anymore) and is about the same size. There's an OPC Insignia too. (OPC is Opel's "performance" arm)

It will be nice to see the HWP using slower cars for a change.
Because as they keep telling us every kmh over the limit is a killer!

Not cool but i guess they have to do what is best for their bottom line, their sales have not been good for the past few years, not good for all Ford's Australian employee's either
