Really???? I'm also aware of the "dounut" rubber at the top of the strut failing... You can usually tell its toast just by looking at it... will be turning upwards like someones done the nut up to tight...

Yeah i just had a look, one of them has a slight crack but i don’t see how that could be causing the noise. It could be the strut bearings as there is a bit of rotation a can make on them. I tried tightening up the nuts on top of the struts, but i don’t exactly feel comfortable removing the struts completely, I guess i’ll just have to deal with it or wait until it gets worse and then take it to a mechanic.

Is there a rubber insulator between the base of the spring and the strut plate?

I don’t think i’d be able to tell there isn’t much room to slip my finger in or get a good view of it, maybe tomorrow i will try stick my phone camera up there to check for any damage

Check your front lower control arm and radius arm ball joints.

Turn the wheel full lock you can see the insulator if it has them.

Will any thin sheet of rubber do the same thing? Mine doesn't have the insulators, makes a few clunks over rough surfaces.

I would think so, its just a rubber disc.
