I'm thinking nearly every VX enthusiast has replaced their front seatbelts.
Ours has gone hard and they don't like retracting anymore.
Have Googled replacement seatbelts and have found a place in Brisbane the supplies new non genuine belts to suit most cars.
https://www.seatsafe.com.au/
Quoted $348.80 including freight for 2 fronts, does this price look reasonable.

I wonder if the new non genuine will last longer than the original.

I notice that on two commodores the belts are very tired and resist retracting. It was a problem recently because of the safety inspection.
I sprayed the seat belt with silicon spray and it worked. The belt seems great now. The car passed that defect.
I decided to spray the seat belt on another Commodore which didn't have a problem with seat belt retracting and now that belt seems to stick????

I have a 30 year old Toyota, no problem with seat belts retracting.

Why does this happen, can the springs be retightened?

A good wash with soapy water and then a rinse usually softens them up again.

I would have thought most have replaced the seat belts, oh well safety first and better buy a set for the front.
I'll be happy if I get 10 years of use out of the new belts.

I'd be looking for serviceable second hand ones before dropping $350.

How much is the safety of you and your passengers worth? Buying second hand seat belts means they will probably come from a car that has already been in an accident. How will you determine whether they are "serviceable"?

No frays in the belt, check it retracts and snap it outwards to ensure it locks with inertia. There is no shortage of Commodores in parts breakdown that are not major accident victims. Most major cities have Commodore Specialist recyclers, just saying I doubt the OP would have trouble finding a good used OEM seat belt for a VT/VX and most of the specialist Commode recyclers would likely fit it up on the spot. Personally I'd go with OEM for a seat belt over after market. After all, all but the newest cars out there are running around with used seat belts, it's not inherently unsafe to move them from one chassis to another.
