I got my tax back and got superlows and new struts put in front today. It was meant to be a $550 job but ended up costing over $1000. All my bushes were stuffed and everything. The bloke recons they are still the original bushes thats why there so bad. I ended up talking him down to an even $1000. He said i also have to get a new steering rack which costs in the 400s and a new power steering pump which is leaking fluid. He said costs $260 for a brand new one but i dont have the money for that and the rack yet. Can i somehow get a power steering pump for cheaper or fix it myself??? If the fluid keeps leaking all over the new bushes it will stuff them again. Its a pretty slow leak. i have to top it up about every 2 weeks. But there is fluid all under the car (under sump and on oil filter and leaking on the bushes). And steering rack??? im not too sure what it does??? What could be wrong with it. Would it be worth saving up over $400 to get a new one??? Cheers fellas
ur steer rack shouldnt be that much i got mine from repco and got tie rod ends n sum other part (cant remember wat it was called) for bout 260 so 400 sounds a bit high.....not sure on power streer pump but that sounds bout right mite find one for round 200..... ill ask me dad how much they worth he works in beaurepairs does em all the time...ill pm ya with info
just readin sounds like the pump n racks would com to 400 thats the only way it would be soo expensive
maybe run a bottle of nulon stop power steering leak through it first to see if that stops it, other then that, ring around, you should be able to get the rack cheaper than that... and if the leak is coming from the pump probly all you will need to replace are the o rings, not sure how many there are though
I got a price for a power steering pump last week from Repco & it was only $143 plus GST. A reman pump is around $130 plus.
Thanx guys. I have some of that powersteering stop leak stuff. Its powersteering and stopleak mixed in one but i didnt know how to drain the powersteering fluid to put the new one in so i have just been toping it up with the new stuff. Do you know a easy way to drain the fluid so i cant put a full bottle in? And yeah he said the steering rack was about $425. That fitted. I told him not to worry about it for now just so i could check around and see if that was a good price or not. Are they hard to fit urself? cheers edit: vt1538 are the pumps hard to fit??
Well springs were $140 i think, struts i could have got cheeper but i got these good shortend sports ones. they were $290. and it not just bushes. there is a hole heap of other little things that he replaced. I dont know what there called but the pin thing that goes through the bushes, a few of them were worn out to the max and were about 5mm thinner in the middle so they got replaced and a few other little things plus a days labour. Have not got it back yet. im still waiting for a call. Its been up on the hoist since 9am.
Yeh i think the word your looking for is the 'link pin', $290 for shocks, owch. Oh i forgot the front shocks r more expensive then rears, damnnn lucky i got myne from ebay cheeep.
There is nothing hard about changing the pump. Just remember to refill with clean oil & make sure all the air is out of the system before driving. Usually by the time you have started the engine, turned the wheel a couple of times both ways & checked for leaks it is OK to drive.
Does anyone know the easyest way to drain the powersteering fluid thats in there now??? because i want to put a bottle of that stop leak stuff in before i spend anymoney on it and see if that works.
Yeah the front shocks were $290. I could have got $190 ones but they were just like stock shocks. And he said with the height i want my car i am better off with shortend shocks to keep the spring trapped proply. That $1000 also included a wheel alignment. I thought $1000 was a bit harsh but i still had to talk him down to that price. I just told him im a young fella still at school and want a good handleing car and he said, Yeah i remember being in your situation i will see what i can do for you.
