Im trying to diagnose whether my fuel pump is shot
When i prime the engine with
Fuel in the carb, the engine starts. Runs a bit rough and barely draws fuel into the filter. When i shut the engine down, fuel drains back out

I did the fuel pump diaphragm on my HX after a similar thing. Easy enough job from memory,( it’s been 87years.)

Sounds like fuel pump. Or are you sure you have fuel in the tank?

As VC said, undo the line at the carb, crank engine, fuel should pump out. if it doesn't you're pump is shot. If it does, could be the needle and seat in the carby.

*edit* check the oil, pull the dipstick and see if it smells fuelly.

You saying that brought back to me what was one of the earliest things I can remember learning about car repairs. Long thought forgotten. I fixed the fuel pump on mums car at 10 or 11. (Dad shot through) she couldn’t afford a mechanic, but he had taught me how to do it around 6 or 7. Got me to smell the oil as a clue.

I felt really proud I could help mum :) Thanks for the memory flashback.

Options 1 - As above
Replace the diaphragm in the Fuel Pump housing.

or

Option 2
Disregard the Mechanical Fuel Pump,
and install a Electric one. [constant fuel pressure]

and a fuel pump safety switch (either tachymetric or oil pressure type)
if you do fit an electric pump. Car is not legal if the safety switch is not fitted...
